Leatherneck Women's Tennis Victorious in OVC Opener

MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois women's tennis team put together a very strong performance as a team, toppling the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles, 6-1.

The Leathernecks kicked off the day strong by taking the doubles point. Richardlyne Francois and Madeleine Whip got things started quickly with a 6-2 win at 3 doubles. Mana Fawcett and Jessica Hess won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, to clinch the doubles point. At No. 2 doubles, Chloe Routier and Nadezhda Petkova fell short 3-6. 

Denver Johnson was the first to finish her singles match, with a decisive 6-1, 6-0 victory at 6 singles. Madeleine Whip battled through a tough first set before rolling in the second to a 6-4, 6-0 victory. The Leathernecks 4th point was clinched by Chloe Routier in a solid all-around performance 6-4, 6-3 to clinch the team victory.  

With the team result being decided, the remaining matches all went to a tiebreak for the third set. Mana Fawcett dropped a thrilling match at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 6-4, 10-7. Richardlyne Francois started out by losing the first set before taking over her match to win in convincing fashion 4-6, 6-3, 10-2. In a marathon match at No. 4 singles, Nour Gueblaoui was able to persevere, 7-6, 6-7, 13-11.

The Leathernecks will look to continue the strong start to OVC play as they head to Nashville, Tennessee to take on the Tennessee State Tigers Wednesday, March 18.
