Leathernecks Battle but Drop Two To Tigers

Western Illinois led for most of game one, but a late rally pushed Missouri passes Western on Wednesday (April 15).

MACOMB, Ill. - The Fighting Leathernecks led 4-1 after four innings of play during the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday (April 15), but Western could not hang on, dropping a pair of games to No. 20 Missouri. The Leathernecks are now 13-17 on the year.

"I was really proud of how we came out and attacked," said head coach Holly Van Vlymen. "We just need to continue to not let things fall apart when one thing happens. We know that with a team like Mizzou, one thing can hurt you, but you just have to continue to work through it. "

GAME ONE: Western Illinois 4, Missouri 15 -

Kacyee Hart kept Missouri off the board for the first two innings, limiting the Tigers offense to just one walk. Hart was able to work with the lead in the second inning, thanks to a three-run first from Western. Sammy Marshall led off the inning with a single before scoring on a Tierney Bottino double to left. The junior moved to third on the throw home and came around on a ground ball from Lia Romeo. Holly Hoelting increased the Leatherneck advantage to 3-0, sending a full count pitch over the fence in left field. Her solo home run was her second home run in three games and moved her into a tie for the team lead.

The Tigers scored one run in the third on a solo home run, but Western immediately got the run back in the bottom half. Again it was Marshall leading off the inning with a single, which was followed by a Teagan Walsh single to put runners at first and second. A ground ball off the bat from Bottino moved Marshall to third, but the second baseman was unable to catch the throw from third, allowing Marshall to score to once again give Western a three-run lead.

The Tigers put the leadoff runner on for the first time in the ballgame in the fifth, and would use it, ultimate scoring six runs in the inning. Now trailing 7-4, Western had a chance to cut into the lead or even tie, as both Bottino and Romeo reached in the bottom half, but a pop out ended the Leatherneck threat.

Kayla Kirkpatrick, who entered the game in the fifth, limited the Tigers to just a pair in the sixth. Kirkpatrick and Stulga worked the seventh, as Missouri plated six more runs.

The Leathernecks put two runners on to lead off the sixth, but could not break through, falling 15-4 in the first game.

Hart pitched four innings, allowing four runs on four hits with one strikeout. Kirkpatrick went 2.1 innings, allowing the final 11 runs. Stulga worked the final two-thirds of an inning, striking out one. Marshall recorded her 69th career multi-hit game, going two-for-four from the plate with a pair of runs scored. Walsh also collected two hits.

GAME TWO: Western Illinois 1, Missouri 8 -

Brooke Stulga got the start in the nightcap and settled into the contest after allowing four runs (two earned) in the first inning. The freshman held the Tigers to just four hits the rest of the way.

Western was unable to get anything going offensively until the fourth, when the Leathernecks manufactured a run.

Missouri scored single runs in the third and fourth before scoring two in the fifth for their eight runs. The game was called after the fifth inning due to darkness.

Stulga pitched 4.1 innings, allowing 10 hits and eight runs (five earned). Walsh recorded the final two outs for Western, allowing one hit.

Marshall collected the lone hit for Western.

The Fighting Leathernecks look to continue to climb The Summit League standings with a trip to Brookings, South Dakota to face South Dakota State. The three-game conference series between the Leathernecks and Jackrabbits begins on Saturday (April 18) and concludes on Sunday (April 19). The Leathernecks and Jackrabbits are currently tied with a 3-6 record in league play.
