Strong Pitching Performances Lead Western to Split in Brookings

Western Illinois took the first game of the doubleheader on Saturday (April 18) against South Dakota State.

BROOKINGS, S.D.  – Western Illinois softball was on both ends of a pair of pitcher's duels on Saturday (April 18). The Leathernecks (14-18, 4-7) split a doubleheader with South Dakota State (14-22, 4-7), as the teams remain in a tie for fifth place in The Summit League.

"I thought Kacyee and Kayla did a great job today on the mound and Brooke did well on relief," said head coach Holly Van Vlymen. "We put the hits together when we needed to and scored some runs in the first game but our offense needed to step it up today. We needed to take advantage of situations and we have better pitch selection at the plate."

GAME ONE: Western Illinois 3, South Dakota State 1 –

The Leathernecks got on the board first, with Sammy Marshall scoring her 154th career run on a Tierney Bottino single. Working with a 1-0 lead, Kacyee Hart allowed only three baserunners through four innings, taking a no-hitter into the fifth.

Western tacked on a pair of runs in the third, collecting three base hits with two outs. Teagan Walsh kept the inning alive with a base hit to left, before Bottino got her second hit of the day, putting runners at first and second. Lia Romeo was hit by a pitch, the 55th of her career tying a Summit League record, to load the bases. Holly Hoelting then followed with a single to right, scoring Walsh and Bottino.

SDSU got one back in the fifth, as Hart allowed two hits in the inning. The Jackrabbits led off the sixth with a double, but Hart worked herself out of the inning, recording her sixth strikeout of the game to end the inning. The junior started the seventh in similar fashion, tying her season-high. Hart then forced a pop out and ground out to give Western the 3-1 victory.

Bottino finished the game with two singles and an RBI. Hart (7-8) got the win, striking out seven in the process.

GAME TWO: Western Illinois 0, South Dakota State 3 -

Western had runners at first and second in each of the first two innings but could not push the runners across. Kayla Kirkpatrick meanwhile, picked up where Hart left off, striking out two in the first three innings while surrendering just a pair of hits.

Neither team was able to break through until the fifth, when the Jackrabbits scored on back-to-back home runs. Following the home runs, Brooke Stulga entered, who struck out the first batter she faced before allowing consecutive hits that scored a third SDSU run. Stulga would end the fifth and keep the Jackrabbits off the board in the sixth to give Western a chance in the seventh.

Western put one on in the seventh, but that was all as Western fell 3-0.

Kirkpatrick (4-7) allowed two runs on five hits over four innings. Stulga worked the final two frames, allowing four hits and one run.

The series will be decided on Sunday (April 19) with the third game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. in Brookings, South Dakota.
