Baseball Loses Game Two Versus ORU

Western drops 10-0 decision in seven innings.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois dropped game two of the Summit League baseball series to Oral Roberts on Saturday afternoon, 10-0.

The Fighting Leathernecks (9-19 overall, 5-9 Summit League) kept ORU off the scoreboard in the first two innings. In the third, ORU took advantage of a leadoff single and walk to start the frame. A sacrifice bunt moved runners into scoring position then Western retired Derrian James for the first time in the series following a sacrifice fly. However, three straight walks and a 2-run single led to a four-run frame for the Golden Eagles.

ORU started the fourth inning the same with a single and walk. Two runs scored on a wild pitch followed by a RBI double. A triple and groundout brought in two more runs during the sixth, then a leadoff home run and sacrifice fly in the seventh eventually ended the game on a run-rule.

Western could not get the offense going against Bryce Howe, managing three singles and one walk. During the fourth, Payton Jeffers lined a one-out single and Jake Moore followed with a walk. However, Howe got out of the jam thanks to a strikeout and groundout to end the threat.

Mark Garton singled in the third and fifth to account for the other two WIU hits.

"The biggest thing is to get back to where we are good. We were not competitive on the mound in the zone, forcing them to swing the bat. We've moved guys up by walking guys and hitting guys. At the plate we have not forced their pitchers to be in the zone. Our approach has not been good," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "There's a certain way you have to play the game of baseball to compete on a daily basis. We haven't done that the last two days. I'm looking forward to seeing how our guys handle tomorrow because if we get back to where we are good and control what we can control we will be in good shape."

Tom Constand (2-5) gave up six runs on five hits in 3.2 innings. He struck out two but walked seven. Nick Milligan was charged for two runs in 2.1 innings and Robert Nunn gave up two runs working the seventh inning.

Dean Wilson accounted for four of ORU's 10 hits in the game. Howe pitched six shutout innings to improve to 2-1.

Western will look to salvage the weekend finale against league-leading ORU on Sunday (April 12), a scheduled 12 noon first pitch.
