Baseball Falls in Series Finale to Oral Roberts

Western drops finale on Sunday (April 12) in Macomb.

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois baseball fell to Summit League-leader Oral Roberts on Sunday (April 12) by a score of 5-0, marking the first sweep of the Leathernecks in Summit League play this season. The loss drops WIU to 9-20 overall and 5-10 in the league.

A bunt-single and a stolen base from Brent Turner highlighted the day for the Leathernecks.

"They beat us in all three phases of the game. They played better defense, they threw more strikes, and they executed offensively," said head coach Ryan Brownlee following the loss. "We didn't beat them in any phase all weekend so we got swept. When we start beating teams in all three phases we'll start winning. Tip your cap to them, but some of that was on us. They got their first two runs of the day on free bases. Once you give a team momentum like that it's tough to get it back. We were too aggressive at the plate and it looked a little like a first weekend for us. It's disappointing because you obviously want to come out and play well. They're in first place and you want to show you compete in our league. We have a lot of process left to go through."

The game opened as a pitcher's duel between Leatherneck starter Preston Church and ORU's Tyler Buss. Both pitcher's combined for 10 strikeouts in the first three innings with the Golden Eagles scoring first on a an RBI-walk in the top of the second inning.

The Golden Eagles plated an unearned run in the fourth and added two more in the fifth inning, including a leadoff home run from Derrian James.

Buss carried a no hitter into the sixth inning before a bunt single from Turner ended ORU's bid. An insurance run in the eighth put the game out of reach for a struggling Leatherneck offense.

Church (1-6) was given the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits, four walks, and six strikeouts in five innings as Tyler Owings and Jordan Pannel combined for the final four innings of relief.

ORU's Derrian James capped off a nine-hit weekend with nine RBIs, fives runs, and one home run. Oral Roberts improves to 24-10 overall and a Summit League-best 13-2.

Western will look to bounce back on Tuesday (April 14) at home in a doubleheader against Milwaukee starting at 1 p.m.
