Leathernecks Split Doubleheader With Panthers

Western won game one of the twin bill 6-4.

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois baseball split its midweek doubleheader with Milwaukee winning game one 6-4 and dropping game two 7-1 on Tuesday (April 14) at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.

JJ Reimer went 2-for-4 with three runs in the twin bill while J.T. Baksha earned his second win of the season in game one. Colan Borchers tallied his first career save. The split moves WIU to an overall record of 10-21 with a 5-10 Summit League mark. UWM is now 18-12 and 6-8 in the Horizon League.

The day opened with Baksha pitching 3.2 perfect frames of baseball with the Purple and Gold offense grabbing three runs early.

Brent Turner led off the bottom of the first with a walk before Colton Pogue singled to move Turner to third with no outs. A ground-ball double play scored Turner before UWM could get out of the inning.

In the second Reimer singled to center field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Adam McGinnis drew a walk and a double steal put runners on second and third with nobody out. A passed ball by the Panther catcher would bring Reimer in to score, and a two-out single from Dave Dobrinich scored McGinnis making it 3-0, Western.

Milwaukee's first base runner of the game came on a two-out single in the fourth, but the Leatherneck defense held fast.

However the top of the fifth led to four Panther runs on two hits and three errors, giving Milwaukee a 4-3 lead. Western would respond with three more runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Pogue started things off with a single to center field before advancing to second on one of five balks in the game. Jake Moore added a single to score Pogue and tie the game before UWM could register its first out. A wild pitch put Moore on third and a Reimer single to left brought him home, giving Western the lead. McGinnis tallied a base hit of his own and stole his second base of the game to put runners on second and third. A Mark Garton sacrifice fly brought Reimer home as insurance for the Purple and Gold.

In the top of the sixth Borchers came on to pitch for Baksha. The freshman recorded two perfect frames to earn the save.

On the game Baksha went five innings with four runs (one earned), just three hits, and two strikeouts. Borchers allowed no hits and fanned two Panthers of his own.

At the plate Reimer went 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs while Pogue added two hits and a run of his own. In the opener Western combined for nine hits, and five stolen bases with McGinnis grabbing two.

In game two UWM came out swinging, taking an early five-run lead in the top of the first. The Panther runs came on three hits and one error before Pete Minella came on to get the final out.

Turner led off the bottom of the first with a single, and that would be the only Leatherneck hit until the seventh.

Milwaukee plated two more in the top of the seventh. A pitch to the elbow of Reimer and back-to-back singles from McGinnis and Garton ended the shutout, but a ground-ball double play would squelch the Leatherneck rally.

Nick Smith (0-2) was saddled with the loss. Minella, along with three other pitchers combined for over six innings of two-run relief (no runs earned), with Sam Cottingham-Beard leading the way, striking out three.

Garton went 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI while Roman Visintine added two walks in the effort.

Western returns to the field this Friday (April 17) for a Summit League road series at Fort Wayne. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. (CT) at Mastodon Field. As previously announced, live audio will not be available due to facilities limitations.
