MACOMB, Ill. -Â For the third consecutive week, Western Illinois softball was forced to change its travel plans. Following the cancellation of the Southeast Games in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, the Leathernecks will face the Phoenix of Green Bay at the Sparta Dome in Crown Point, Indiana on Saturday (March 7). Western Illinois will then return to Macomb, before heading to St. Charles, Missouri to face Southeast MIssouri State on Sunday (March 8). The Leathernecks and Phoenix will play a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM in Crown Point, Indiana. Meanwhile, the doubleheader against the Redhawks will begin at 11:45 a.m. at the Lou Brock Sports Complex on the campus of Lindenwood College.Â

SCOUTING THE PHOENIX: Green Bay returns to action after one month away due to weather... Having played five games at the UNI Dome Classic during the opening weekend of the 2015 season, the Phoenix enter Saturday with a 2-3 mark... Green Bay has losses to Iowa, North Dakota State and Northern Iowa... Green Bay is coming off of a 27-win season and a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2014... The Phoenix return an all-league pitcher in Briana Cavin as well as All-Freshman team honorees Heather Sanderson and Allie Taylor... Taylor is 2-15 from the plate this season while Sanderson has allowed nine earned runs in 13.2 innings of work... Cavin meanwhile has walked eight batters in 11 innings of work, allowing 12 earned runs on her way to a 1-2 record... Jaclyn Delagrange and Abby Brinkmeier lead the team with a .375 average... Both batters have recorded one double and one home run, combining for seven of the team's 17 RBIs... The Phoenix have stolen four bases... Opponents are 12-12 on the basepaths... The Phoenix are under first year head coach Beth Spoehr... Previous head coach Jean Rivett retired following the 2014 season.
SERIES HISTORY: Western Illinois is 20-4 against Green Bay all-time... Only one of those losses came at a neutral venue... The Leathernecks and Phoenix last met in 2010, splitting a doubleheader in Macomb... Western Illinois won the first game 4-0, before Green Bay took the second 8-5.
SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS: Southeast Missouri State heads into Sunday with a 3-6 record overall and on a three game losing skid, following losses to Arkansas, UT-Martin, and Saint Louis... The Redhawks are off to a hot start offensively, hitting .342 as a team while scoring 56 runs through nine games... Kayla Fortner is one of five players with a batting average over .400... Fortner is hitting .481 with five home runs and 15 RBIs... Taylor McDannold adds five doubles and a .452 average to the Redhawk offense while Lindsey Patterson has driven in 10 runs to go along with her .400 average... SEMO has hit 10 home runs this year, along with 15 doubles and three triples... Redhawk pitching has been the downfall early in 2015... Madeline Krumey has pitched 25.2 innings, allowing 23 earned runs during that time, walking 16 and allowing four home runs... Kearira Schilling is 2-2 through four starts, giving up 16 earned through 18 innings... Opponents are batting .379 against Schilling, and .376 against Redhawk pitching... Mark Redburn is in his first season at Southeast Missouri State.
SERIES HISTORY: Western Illinois is 2-0 against the Redhawks... The first meeting was back in 1984, a 4-0 win for Western... In 2012, Western won 12-4... Marshall was 4-for-4 from the plate with three stolen bases, Teagan Walsh recorded a double, and Lia Romeo recorded an RBI against the Redhawks... Ashley Campbell hit a two-run home run in the contest.
FACING ADVERSITY: The Leathernecks have faced their share of adversity off the field during the first month of the 2015 season... Much like other schools up north, Western Illinois has had three consecutive tournaments cancelled, and have sought other options over the previous two weeks, including this weekend's contests... Western was originally scheduled to play 50 games this season, and are now on track to play 43 contests.
WEEKEND UPDATE - DIAMOND 9: The Leathernecks were forced to head south in order to avoid a second-straight weekend of complete cancellations... Western Illinois was scheduled to play six games in Bay Lake, Florida, but the schedule was cut to four after rain moved into the area on Saturday (Feb. 28)... Western picked up a 3-2 win over Columbia on the opening day, but losses to Miami (Ohio), Penn State and UAB sent Western home with a 1-3 record... The top of the order set the table, combining to hit .400 over the four games... Sammy Marshall scored five runs, including run number 127 during her career, setting a new Western Illinois record... Kelsey Marlow and Teagan Walsh recorded 5 RBIs total during the weekend... Brooke Stulga picked up her first career victory, pitching six innings against the Lions, allowing one earned run on four hits... Kacyee Hart finished 0-1, but collected one save and ten strikeouts, while holding batters to a .114 average.
RECORDS FALL: In the third inning against Penn State, Sammy Marshall scored her 127th career run... The senior is now number one in three categories at Western Illinois (stolen bases, batting average)... Fellow seniors Teagan Walsh and Lia Romeo are also in prime position to enter the top 10 or break records in 2015...Romeo already has the record for most hit by pitches at Western Illinois. Â |
