MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois men's basketball, the eighth seed in the 2015 Summit League Championships, opens postseason play versus top-seed South Dakota State in quarterfinals action Saturday night (March 7) at 6 p.m... The winner of Saturday night's contest will advance to the semifinals… The semifinals will be played on Monday (March 9)... WIU is 0-5 all-time as the eight seed, and 0-2 all-time against SDSU in the championships.

LEATHERNECKS VS. JACKRABBITS SERIES HISTORY: South Dakota State leads the 20-game series 17-3, with SDSU having won 15-of-16 and the last 14 consecutive meetings... Prior to the Jackrabbits joining The Summit League, the two teams faced each other twice, first on December 31, 1948, when WIU won at home, 64-41, and then again on February 29, 1980, when SDSU won 98-86 on a neutral court... Western won the next meeting in Macomb, the two teams' first-ever league contest, 75-52... WIU's only other league win over the Jackrabbits came on February 7, 2009, when the Leathernecks defeated SDSU 62-59 at home.ALL-LEAGUE: Fighting Leatherneck men's basketball sophomore guard Garret Covington was named All-Summit League Second Team Thursday afternoon (March 5), becoming the first ever player in Western Illinois program history to be named all-league second team twice... Summit League annual honors are voted on by league coaches, sports information directors and select media members... Like this year, Covington was also tabbed All-League Second Team following his 2013-14 freshman campaign... Covington was also honored as the league's 'Newcomer of the Year' last season. INJURY UPDATE: Western Illinois lost two starters to potentially season-ending injuries during league play... Sophomore Mike Miklusak injured his knee versus Oral Roberts on Jan. 10 and has dressed the last two games, but has yet to see action, while junior forward Tate Stensgaard hurt his wrist against North Dakota State on Feb. 1 and is still sidelined... Senior guard Remy Roberts-Burnett also missed significant time due to a head injury and is currently day-to-day after suffering a setback at IUPUI (Feb. 26)… Before the 2014-15 season began WIU lost two of its incoming freshmen to year-long injuries or illness in Jalen Morgan and Kendall Rollins... Morgan injured his knee during a preseason practice while Rollins was forced to miss the entire year due to an undisclosed illness. COVINGTON'S LAST FOUR GAMES: Western Illinois sophomore guard Garret Covington tallied the two highest point totals of his career and has averaged 22.0 points during the Leathernecks' last four games... After notching 31 points at home versus South Dakota State (Feb.18) where he connected on 13-of-17 shots (76.5 percent) from the field and 5-of-7 (71.4 percent) from long range, he tallied 30 points at IUPUI last Thursday night (Feb. 26), 25 of which came in the second half... Along with his team-best 22.0 points per game during the last four games, Covington is also averaging a team-high 7.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals per game in a team-high 35.8 minutes played... He is also shooting 50.0 percent (32-of-64) from the field, a team-best, and 44.4 percent (12-of-27) from long range. J.C. FULLER HOT STREAK: Western Illinois junior guard J.C. Fuller, one of The Summit League's top newcomers, started off league play slow only averaging 5.0 points and shooting just 30 percent (9-of-30) from the field through the first five league games... Since then, through the last 11 league games, Fuller has shot 48.0 percent from the floor (71-of-148) and averaged a team-high 17.0 points… During that same time Fuller has also grabbed 4.1 rebounds, dished out 2.6 assists, and shot 42.6 (23-of-54) from long range. BATISH FROM LONG RANGE: Junior guard Jamie Batish, who is shooting a team-best 42.9 percent from the three-point line this season, finished the 2014-15 Summit League slate ranked first among all players connecting on 50.0 percent (33-of-66) of his attempts from long range during league play… His best multi-game stretch of shooting from beyond the arc came during a four league games (Jan. 30 - Feb. 12) where he connected on 68.4 percent of his attempts, making 13-of-19. RECORD BOOK WATCH: Sophomore guard Garret Covington has 843 career points which ranks 40th all-time, 45 points shy from sole possession of 35th all-time and 88 points away from sole possession of 30th... Tommy Fowlkes ranks 35th with 887 points, and Bobby Dye ranks 30th with 930 points... Covington also jumped into WIU's 'Top 10' in career three-pointers this season... He has 132 career three-pointers at WIU which ranks tied for seventh all-time with Troy Okeson (2004-07)… Mark Buckingham sits sixth all-time with 141 career three-pointers… Covington's 62 treys this season puts him in a tie for ninth in WIU's 'Top 10'. MORE COVINGTON FOR THREE: Sophomore guard Garret Covington has 132 career three-pointers... He had 70 three-pointers as a freshman, and has 62 so far as a sophomore... He has played in 56 career games, has only had six games without at least one three-pointer, meaning he has made at least one triple in 50 games... He has 35 games with multiple three-pointers... He has 14 games with one trey, nine games with two triples, 11 games with three makes from long range, 10 games with four three-pointers, four games with five connections from beyond the arc, and a career-high six three-pointers in one game... He made his six triples in WIU's win over Idaho earlier this season (Dec. 11). DOUBLE FIGURES: Sophomore guard Garret Covington has 843 career points and averages 15.1 points per game during his career... He has 42 games with 10 or more points, 31 games having scored between 10-19 points, 11 games with 20-plus points, and two games with 30-plus points... He finished the Leathernecks' game versus South Dakota State at home (Feb. 18) with 31 points, a career-best... Those 31 points were the most by a member of the program since David Jackson scored 32 against Fort Wayne on Nov. 21, 2006... He later tallied 30 points at IUPUI on Feb. 26. SANDIFER'S ASSISTS: Sophomore guard Jabari Sandifer, who finished the 2014-15 Summit League slate ranked first out of all players in assists per game (3.9), has 208 assists in his young career, and averages 3.6 per game during that time... As a freshman, he played in all 30 games and averaged a team-best 3.1 per game (92 total)… This season he has played in all 27 games this season and averages 4.3 per game (116 total)... He has at least one assist in all but two of his 57 career games played... He has multiple assists in 52 of those games, 3-plus assists in 42 career games, 25 games with 4-plus, 11 games with 5-plus, 10 games with 6-plus, and five games with seven or more... His four games with eight-plus assists have all come this season... He logged a career-high 13 assists this season versus Greenville College (Nov. 29) while not turning the ball over in 29 minutes of play... His 13 helpers was two shy of WIU's single-game record. TEAM STAT LEADERS: Sophomore Garret Covington is the only Leatherneck to have started all 27 games for the Leathernecks... Covington also leads the team in points per game (15.6), minutes per game (33.2), field goals (131), three-pointers (62), free throws (97), free throw percentage (82.2), steals (29) and defensive rebounds (113)... Senior Mohamed Conde leads the team in field goal percentage (50.4), rebounds per game (6.1) and offensive rebounds (64)... Junior Jalen Chapman leads the team in blocks (18)... Junior Jamie Batish leads the team in three-point field goal percentage (42.9)... Sophomore Jabari Sandifer leads the team in assists per game (4.3). |
