Leathernecks Split With RedHawks

Western Illinois split a midweek doubleheader with Miami on Monday (March 23).

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois came from behind to take the first game of a doubleheader on Monday (March 23) against Miami. The Leathernecks took the first contest 5-4 in eight innings before falling in the second game, 5-1. With the split, Western is now 9-11 overall in 2015.

"I thought our energy was really good today," said head coach Holly Van Vlymen. "We were standing the whole time and we came through when we needed to. I was really happy with Kacyee's performance and then Teagan came in and did what she usually does. The team really came together even though we came out a little shaky. But we talked about just getting better today, and I think we did as the game went on. In the second game, we faced a great pitcher and we didn't make adjustments when we needed to. We had seen her once before in Florida so we knew what to expect but we just didn't make the adjustments early enough. As the game went on, we had better at bats though. We can still improve defensively but our pitchers did well. Kayla and Brooke bounced back and did a really good job today. We just need to have fun and put the pressure on the other team. We're in a good spot, we just need to keep pressing through."

GAME ONE: Western Illinois 5, Miami 4 -

The RedHawks plated two runs in the first, utilizing an error, consecutive singles, and a ground out. Kacyee Hart limited the damage though, forcing another ground out and a fly out to end the inning.

Western responded immediately however in the bottom half of the inning, sparked by a Sammy Marshall single to leadoff the inning. Marshall stole second, moved to third on a fly ball, and scored on a ground ball of the bat of Tierney Bottino

Hart continued her impressive stretch, striking out two RedHawks in the second inning. Miami capitalized on another Leatherneck error in the third however, to put Western behind 3-1.

The Leathernecks would not threaten again until the fourth inning, but would make the most of their opportunity. Bottino and Lia Romeo reached on back-to-back singles with one out, setting the table for Kelsey Marlow. The freshman followed with a single of her own, scoring Bottino. Nina Maggio then reached on an error, allowing Romeo to score and tie the game at three.

Teagan Walsh entered the circle to begin the fifth inning and retired nine of the first ten batters she faced. Western was unable to push the winning run across the plate, forcing the game to go to extras.

With the international tiebreaker rule in effect, both teams began with the last recorded out at second base, and both runners would eventually score. The RedHawks took advantage of two inield singles to go in front 4-3, but a sacrifice bunt and two ground outs ended the inning.

Karissa Kouchis began the inning at second for Western, and moved to third on a single from Marshall. Walsh helped her own cause, by scoring Kouchis and reaching on an error. Bottino advanced both runners 60 feet with a ground ball, forcing Miami to intentionally walk Lia Romeo. With the bases loaded and one out in the inning, Marlow didn't have to take the bat off her shoulders, as Marshall used her speed to steal home when the RedHawks tried to pick her off at third base.

Walsh recorded her first win of 2015, pitching the final four innings, allowing one unearned run and striking out one as well. Hart allowed one earned run during the first four innings. The junior did't walk anyone and struck out three.

Marshall recorded two hits and scored two runs, while Walsh, Bottino, and Marlow all recorded an RBI for Western.

GAME TWO: Western Illinois 1, Miami 5 -

Miami threatened immediately in the first inning, putting runners at second and third against Kayla Kirkpatrick. The senior immediately forced a ground ball to first, before a ground ball to Marshall at short caught the lead runner off the bag at third for the second out. Kouchis then followed with a catch in right field to keep the game scoreless.

Western almost repeated its first inning from the first game, but Marshall was left at second as the final out was recorded.

The RedHawks put the first two runners on before a single and a sac fly put Miami in front 2-0 after two innings. A home run in the third made it 3-0 and an RBI single in the fourth put Western behind 4-0.

Brooke Stulga came on in the fifth for a scheduled appearance. The freshman gave up a solo home run in the fifth, but retired the final eight batters of the game.

Western was held without a hit after Marshall's single in the first until the sixth inning. Kouchis led off the sixth by hitting her second home run of the season and third of her career to right center field. Marshall then singled and Romeo was hit by a pitch for the 50th time in her career, but both were left on the bases.

Trailing 5-1 heading into the final inning, Western went down with a fight, as Nina Maggio drew a leadoff walk. But the sophomore was stranded, as the Leathernecks fell 5-1.

Kirkpatrick was hit with the loss after allowing four earned runs on six hits. The senior struck out one batter. Stulga allowed one run in three innings of work, striking out a pair. Western Illinois pitching did not walk anyone in either contest.

Marshall and Kouchis recorded base hits for Western.

The Leathernecks return to Summit League play on Saturday (March 28) against Fort Wayne. The three-game series is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
