Softball Drops Summit League Road Contest to Fort Wayne

Lia Romeo hit her first home run of the year in the 6-4 loss.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Lia Romeo's two-run home run in the seventh gave Western Illinois second life, but the Leathernecks came up short, falling 6-4 to Fort Wayne on Sunday (March 29). The Leathernecks are now 9-12 on the year and 0-4 in Summit League play.

In what was originally scheduled to be a doubleheader, Western Illinois took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Sammy Marshall led off the game with a single, stole second base and went to third on a groundball to the right side of the infield. Tierney Bottino singled to left, plating Marshall, giving Western the early lead.

Kacyee Hart worked around a leadoff single to keep the Mastodons off the board and fanned two to end the inning. After neither team was able to threaten in the second, Marshall hit a high fly ball to left-center field, tipping off the centerfielder's glove. Marshall made it to third on the play. Walsh took the very next pitch to left field, giving Western a 2-0 lead.

IPFW used a two-out rally to tie the game in the third inning, before a solo home run gave the 'Dons a 3-2 lead in the fourth. The game broke open in the fifth, when Fort Wayne scored three runs on only two hits to take a 6-2 lead heading into the sixth.

Walsh entered the game with two outs in the fifth, and recorded the final seven outs of the game with two strikeouts.

Romeo gave Western a needed boost in the seventh with a two-run blast to left, but the rally ended there as Western fell 6-4. The senior was also hit by a pitch twice in the game, giving her 52 in her career and moving her into a tie for second place all-time in Summit League history.

Marshall and Walsh both finished with a pair of hits. Walsh, Bottino, and Romeo all collected RBIs. Hart was hit with the loss, falling to 4-5. The junior went 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits, walking two, and striking out three. Stulga worked 0.1 innings, allowing one run on one hit with a pair of walks.

Western Illinois and Fort Wayne will conclude the series on Monday (March 30) with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. eastern time.
