Western Drops Two to Wichita State

The Leathernecks fell 13-6 in game one and 18-2 in game two.

WICHITA, Kan. - Western Illinois baseball dropped both games of its midweek doubleheader to Wichita State on Tuesday (March 17) at Eck Stadium. The final score of game one was 13-6 while game two ended after seven innings with a final score of 18-2.

The series was originally scheduled for one game on Tuesday and one game Wednesday (March 18). Impending weather changed the matchup to a doubleheader of two nine inning games. Wichita State's sweep drops Western to 3-12 on the season.

"I scheduled this series to see how we would handle the environment," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "I wanted to give guys an opportunity to get midweek games in against good competition, and get ready for the weekend. We didn't handle the environment and that is on me as a coach to get us ready to compete."

Game one of the doubleheader turned into a slugfest early.

The Leathernecks scored first in the top half of the opening inning. Roman Visintine led off with a walk and Payton Jeffers quickly drove him in with an RBI double. Four runs from WSU in the first and two more in the second gave the Shockers a 6-1 lead, but the Purple and Gold bats would change that in the top of the third inning.

Jake Moore would start the rally with a hard hit ball towards first base. It would be scored an error and put Moore on first with one out. Adam McGinnis batted next and hit a single through the left side of the infield. Chris Tschida moved Moore to third and McGinnis to second with a ground ball out to the shortstop. A JJ Reimer double to left field scored Moore and McGinnis to make it 6-3.

Visintine, Jeffers and Tschida added three more runs in the seventh, but it would not be enough after a five-run fifth and two-run seventh from Wichita State.

True-freshman Colan Borchers (0-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing six runs on six hits. Pete Minella and Nick Smith each contributed three innings of relief and combined to allow eight runs on eight hits.

Reimer ended the game with three RBI on three hits with a double, a walk, and a stolen base. Tschida notched his first triple of the season while going 2-5 at the plate with a RBI and run scored. Jeffers scored a run and drove one in while going 2-4 at the plate with a double. Brent Turner added a double of his own while Visintine scored two runs on two walks. Moore extended his hitting streak with a single, a run scored, and a RBI. As a team, the Leathernecks recorded six runs on 13 hits, three walks, and two Shocker errors.

In game two Tschida would hit his second triple of the night and score a run, and Moore would extend his hitting streak to six games. That was the lone bright spot for a Western team that surrendered 18 runs in a shortened seven-inning game.

Carson Cheesman (0-1) made the start on the mound. He lasted 2.1 innings while Sam Cottingham-Beard, Tyler Stolz, and Robert Nunn all made appearances in relief.

Additional hits from Colton Pogue and Mark Garton rounded out a four-hit, two-run nightcap for Western.

The Leathernecks return home this weekend (March 20-22) for a three-game series against Summit League foe South Dakota State. The games are set for Friday (March 20) at 3 pm, and noon on Saturday and Sunday. Live audio will be available for all three games with live video available for the Sunday finale at GoLeathernecks.com/watch.
