GALESBURG, Ill. - The Western Illinois women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to the Saint Louis Billikens Friday (Feb. 6) morning, in Galesburg. The defeat moves the Leathernecks to 0-3 on the season while Saint Louis remains perfect at 3-0 with the victory.
Saint Louis quickly gained the advantage in doubles action as they won at the No. 3 spot by default. The Leathernecks, who were forced to compete with only five competitors, could not field a No. 3 doubles squad. The Billikens clinched the doubles point at the No. 2 spot, as the duo of
Arianna Demos and
Nicole Jones fell by a 6-2 decision.
Courtney Lubbers and
Jenna Wallace fought at the top spot in doubles action, but ultimately dropped a 7-5 decision to the duo of Cervin/Cook of Saint Louis.
In singles action, it was all Saint Louis, as they swept every match in straight sets. Lubbers fell, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 1 spot, while Wallace dropped a decision at No. 2 singles (6-1, 6-2). Demos fell to Natalia Yacamen of Saint Louis, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3, Jones lost 6-3, 6-1 to Madison Cook at No. 4, and
Andriana Johnson fell, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 5. The No. 6 singles match was claimed by Saint Louis by default.
Western has a quick turnaround, as they head to Cedar Falls on Saturday (Feb. 7) for a doubleheader with a pair of Panther squads. First, the Leathernecks will take on the host Panthers of Northern Iowa at 9 a.m., and will follow that with a neutral site contest with the Panthers of Milwaukee at approximately 11 a.m.
