Western Drops Saturday Game to Jacksonville State

Leatherneck Baseball lost the second game of their weekend series 11-3 on Saturday (Feb. 28).

AUBURN, Ala. - Western Illinois baseball is still in search of its first win this season after a tough 11-3 loss to Jacksonville State on Saturday (Feb. 28) in Auburn, Alabama.

Trailing by as many as four runs, WIU battled back to pull within one, before a seven-run eighth inning for JSU put the game out of reach. The loss drops Western to 0-5 this season.

"We had a solid game for seven and a half innings but we gave them two of their first four runs." said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "You can't do that against good teams. Tom gave us a good outing and Jordan did a good job in relief. If we keep having quality starts from our pitchers, good things will happen."

In his second start of the season, Tom Constand started strong with two strikeouts and two pickoffs through two innings pitched. In bottom of the third the Gamecocks would plate one, unearned, after an error allowed the scoring runner to reach base.

Jacksonville State would strike again in the fourth and fifth innings forcing the Leathernecks to send Jordan Pannel in relief of Constand in the bottom of the fifth. JSU would score one more run, charged to Constand, before Pannel notched a strikeout to end the fifth.

A leadoff double from JJ Reimer in the top of the sixth would spark a three-run Purple and Gold rally. Colton Pogue singled to drive in Reimer as Western proceeded to load the bases with no outs. Mark Garton would draw an RBI walk, scoring Maki, to make it 4-2. Kendall King stepped to plate next. The freshman shortstop avoided a groundball double-play as he reached base on an RBI fielder's choice, making the score 4-3, one out.

Brent Turner loaded the bases with a sacrifice bunt combined with a throwing error from the Gamecock pitcher. However, Western then struck out and grounded out to end the inning, still trailing 4-3.

"We left some guys on base again," said Brownlee. "When our offense is going good we should get about one run for a hit. Tonight we had three runs on 12 hits."

Pannel would pitch a scoreless sixth and seventh to send Western into the bottom of the eighth, trailing by one run, 4-3.

In the bottom of eight Jacksonville State plated seven runs on four hits, four walks, and one error with one man left on base making the score 11-2.

Western had two runners reach base in the top of the ninth, but could not plate a run.

"Tomorrow will be about our effort and energy. I am looking forward to seeing how we handle going from a late game into an early game," said Brownlee.

The Leathernecks wrap up the weekend series tomorrow (March 1) with an 10 a.m. game against nationally-ranked Oklahoma State.
