Leathernecks Fall at Chicago State

Jabari Sandifer scored eight points, dished out nine assists and grabbed 10 rebounds

CHICAGO – Chicago State used a late run to recapture the lead midway through the second half on its way to a 77-70 victory over Western Illinois. There were 21 lead changes and seven ties in the nonconference contest.
 
The Fighting Leathernecks fall to 7-3 overall on the season after the defeat, while the Cougars improve to 4-9.
 
After a back-and-forth first half that saw 16 three-pointers, Western found itself up three points following a 7-0 Leatherneck run. CSU was able to respond, however, with a 9-0 run to give the Cougars the lead back, a lead they wouldn't let go.
 
Garret Covington led all scorers with 21 points. The Edwardsville, Ill. native shot 8-of-18 from the field and 5-of-13 from long range. All of his makes from downtown came in the first half. He also grabbed six rebounds.
 
Contributing 17 points to WIU's offense was senior guard J.C. Fuller. He also dished out five assists without turning the ball over.
 
Tate Stensgaard recorded nine points in the loss, while Jabari Sandifer and Mike Miklusak each finished with eight points. Stengaard and Sandifer also each grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, and Sandifer dished out nine assists, a game best.
 
Chicago State was led by Clemmye Owens who finished with 18 points, five rebounds and five assists, all team bests.
 
The Leathernecks conclude nonconference play and action against in-state opponents Monday evening (Dec. 21) at Loyola (Chicago) at 7 p.m. The contest is slated to air live on ESPN3.
