Leathernecks Fall to Oral Roberts on Senior Day

Peyton Crosser and Jordan Jackson honored as Western closes out home slate

MACOMB, Ill. – Seniors Peyton Crosser and Jordan Jackson appeared in their final home match Sunday (Nov. 8) afternoon, as the Leathernecks hosted Oral Roberts on Senior Day. The Purple and Gold claimed a victory in the third set, but Western dropped a 3-1 decision to the Golden Eagles. Western moves to 3-26 (1-13 Summit) on the year with the decision while ORU improves to 14-12 (8-5).

"I think that Peyton (Crosser) and Jordan (Jackson) have laid a great foundation and have been through a lot of changes and different things that they have had to adjust to," said first-year head coach Kelly Richardson. "I think they have gone about that with a lot of dignity and grace and it's been a joy to work with them. I said it at an earlier time that we wish we had more time to work with them, but we've enjoyed our time and they have laid a solid foundation for these kids."

Crosser, a two-year starter for the Leathernecks, joined the program after transferring in after her sophomore season. The Ottumwa, Iowa, native has made her presence known, as she has been one of Western's top targets in just two seasons. Crosser now has 569 career kills following a team-best 13 kill performance Sunday afternoon. She matched a career-high Sunday, tallying three service aces.

Jackson has been a mainstay of the WIU volleyball program, having been a three year starter during her four seasons with the team. The native of Annawan, Illinois, Jackson has now appeared in 104 matches and 368 career sets, and has recorded 229 career blocks and 535 kills. Jackson ended her home career with four kills on the afternoon, while picking up a pair of assist blocks.

The Leathernecks dropped the first two sets, 25-11, 25-16, before answering with a victory in the third set, 25-19. A 5-0 run by Western pushed the WIU lead to 13-9. Crosser opened the run before a pair of Golden Eagles hitting errors forced the visitors to call a timeout. Out of the break, freshman Sierra Bauder connected on back-to-back kills.

Jackson and Abby Skryd each contributed to mini 3-0 run to extend Western's lead to 20-14. Skryd recorded one of her two aces while Jackson connected on an attack out of the middle. The Leathernecks would close out the set and pull within one of ORU, but the Golden Eagles would take the fourth set by a 25-16 margin to cap the 3-1 decision.

Kate Hickey and Kaili Simmons each tallied 10 digs while Skryd (11 assists) and Morgyn Bullock (15) handled the setting duties.

Western closes out the 2015 season this week with a pair of road contests. The Leathernecks first travel to Fort Wayne to take on the Mastodons in a midweek contest. The Tuesday, Nov. 10, match is set to begin at 6 p.m. CT. WIU will then travel to Brookings, South Dakota for a Saturday, Nov. 14 match against the Jackrabbits. First serve is slated for 7 p.m.
