Leathernecks Fall in Three at Fort Wayne

Western Illinois closes out 2015 on Saturday (Nov. 14) at South Dakota State

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Leatherneck volleyball team opened their final week of competition Tuesday (Nov. 10) evening, dropping a 3-0 decision at Fort Wayne. The Purple and Gold lost the first and third sets by 25-19 margins while the Mastodons picked up a 25-15 victory in the middle frame. WIU sits at 3-27 (1-14 Summit) heading into the last match of the year while Fort Wayne improves to 7-23 (4-10).

"We saw some good moments tonight, but ultimately still struggle at putting it together for a full match," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "We did see some strong play from our middles, and that was nice to get that piece of our offense involved. We will get back into the gym on Thursday and try to iron some things before our last match of the year at South Dakota State."

Freshman middle hitter Sierra Bauder posted her best match as a Leatherneck, as her team-high eight kills and .615 hitting percentage were also season-bests for the native of Phoenix, Arizona. Bauder also tallied a pair of assist blocks on the night. Fellow middle Jordan Jackson ranked second on the team Tuesday evening with seven kills, while also collecting two assist blocks.

Western jumped out to a 9-6 lead in the opening set, as a Peyton Crosser kill and a combination block from Crosser and Jackson aided a 4-0 Leatherneck run. The Mastodons countered with a 13-4 scoring spree of their own to firmly jump ahead of WIU. A late three-point rally by the Leathernecks pulled the team within three, but Fort Wayne was able to hold off the late comeback, taking a 25-19 decision.

The Leathernecks were unable to get any momentum going in the second set, falling 25-15, but jumped out to a hot start in the third. Four straight WIU points gave the Purple and Gold a 4-1 early in the set before the Mastodons countered. Midway through the set, Crosser and Bauder teamed up for a block to pull Western within one a 13-12. Fort Wayne was able to string three scoring runs together to close out the match, 25-19.

Western Illinois closes out the regular season on Saturday, November 14, as WIU heads to South Dakota State for a 7 p.m. match against the Jackrabbits.
