South Dakota Tops Western Illinois, 3-0, In Summit League Volleyball

Peyton Crosser and Jordan Jackson to be honored prior to Sunday’s ‘Senior Day’ contest

MACOMB, Ill. – The Leatherneck volleyball team opened its final homestand of the year on Friday, November 6, as Western Illinois played host to South Dakota in Summit League action. Western was in a position to claim the first and second set, but ultimately dropped a 3-0 decision to the Coyotes. Following Friday's contest, Western sits at 3-25 (1-12 Summit League) while South Dakota remains in contention for a berth in The Summit League Tournament with a 6-7 league record (12-14 overall).

"We saw some really good energy, especially at the beginning," said head coach Kelly Richardson "We go back to the part where it's just 23 points. So we were there at 23-23 in both of those sets and just didn't finish. Some of that is our youth, some of that is our confidence, and some of that is us just being ok with winning. We have to get into that mentality and have to do a better job keeping ourselves calm and finishing out. Definitely saw some really good things in those first two sets, we just have to put it all the way through 25 points."

Western struggled out of the gates, spotting the Coyotes the first six points of the match before a South Dakota serving error ended the run. The Purple and Gold attack would heat up, as a 8-2 Leatherneck run pulled the home team within one point of South Dakota. The run was kicked off with five straight points by the Leathernecks, with Kills from Peyton Crosser, Lexi Kolschefski, Krishna Merriman, and Melanie Patenaude aiding the Western effort.

The Leathernecks took their first lead of the set at 15-14 following a combination block from Jordan Jackson and Crosser. Western's senior duo would team up again on the ensuing point for another block to push WIU ahead by a pair. The Leatherneck lead would grow to four at 19-15 forcing a Coyote timeout. USD would counter and the two teams would remain close down the stretch of the opening set. Western had a 23-22 lead following a Kolschefski kill, but three consecutive points from South Dakota gave the visitors the opening set, 25-23.

South Dakota once again jumped out to an early advantage in the second set, as they led the Leathernecks by a 6-2 score. Western was able to climb back into the set, and back-to-back kills from Crosser evened the score at 12-all. From that point on, South Dakota kept a slim lead on the Leathernecks, never leading by more than three points. As the Purple and Gold trailed 23-21 late in the set, Crosser was called upon once again. The senior connected from the outside to pull WIU within a point and a Coyote error would tie things up at 23. South Dakota tallied the final two points to take the second set, 25-23, and would wrap up the match with a 25-18 victory in the final set.

Crosser led all players Friday evening with 13 kills, while Kate Hickey and Kaili Simmons split the team-lead in digs at 11 apiece. Abby Skryd and Morgyn Bullock shared the setting duties, dishing out 19 and 16 assists, respectively.

Crosser and Jackson, Western's two seniors, will be honored next time out, as the Leathernecks play host to Oral Roberts on Senior Day. The Sunday, November 8, contest between Western Illinois and the Golden Eagles is set to being at 1 p.m., with Senior Day recognition happening prior to the match.
