Volleyball Falls in Three Sets at Omaha

Leathernecks return to action next weekend for final homestand of 2015

OMAHA, Neb. – The Western Illinois volleyball team continued Summit League play on Sunday, November 1, as the Leathernecks faced the Mavericks of Omaha on the road. WIU was unable to get any momentum going offensively, as the team dropped a 3-0 decision. Western moves to 3-24 (1-11) on the year while Omaha improved to 14-11 (9-3) with the victory.

"We struggled today to put everything together," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "Omaha definitely came in ready to play on a big day for their program, and we just didn't answer back. We have to do a better job of taking care of the small details, and doing that consistently. We have four matches left over the next two weeks, and it'll be important for us to make improvements on our consistency."

Omaha, which unveiled its brand new Baxter Arena on Sunday as part of its Senior Day festivities, picked up a 25-16 victory in the opening set. Western took an early 6-5 lead thanks to a 4-1 Leatherneck run. Peyton Crosser and Lexi Kolschefski tallied a tandem block while Reilly Dunne recorded a kill to fuel the run. Another 4-1 Western run later in the set gave Western an 11-10 advantage. Crosser and Jordan Jackson each connected on kills while Krishna Merriman and Kolschefski recorded a combination block. The Mavs responded with a 10-0 run to take command of the opening set.

After dropping the second set, 25-15, the Leathernecks and Mavs battled in the third set. Trailing 18-10 in the third, Western's offense kicked it into high gear. A 7-1 Leatherneck run pulled Western within two points of Omaha. A Crosser kill and a Mav hitting error started the run before Omaha registered a kill. Western then received kills from Reilly Dunne, Crosser, and Jackson, paired with two Mavericks hitting errors to get right back into the third set. The WIU momentum was brought to a halt, as Omaha responded with fivestraight points to put the set out of reach. In the end, Omaha would take a 25-18 victory in the third and final set.

Crosser led the way Sunday, as her eight kills were a team-high. Abby Skryd registered 11 assists and Kaili Simmons anchored the defense with 15 digs.

The Leathernecks return to action next Friday and Sunday, November 6 and 8, playing host to South Dakota and Oral Roberts in the final homestand of the season. Western's Friday evening match against the Coyotes is set for 7 p.m. while Sunday's match with the Golden Eagles is slated to start at 2 p.m. Sunday will be Senior Day, as Jackson and Crosser will be honored prior to the start of the match.
