Women's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to North Dakota State in Overtime

An overtime penalty kick sends the Bison past the Leathernecks on Senior Day

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team took on the North Dakota State Bison on Sunday, November 1, in Macomb for its last match of the season. The two sides battled through slick and muddy conditions at John Mackenzie Alumni Field for 96 minutes until the Bison struck following a penalty kick to take the victory, 1-0. With the loss, the Leathernecks fall to 2-15 overall and 1-7 in Summit League play. NDSU moves to 12-5-1 on the year and 7-0-1 in league play, claiming the regular season title.

"...This is disappointing because I felt that we really competed properly. We put up a 0 for 90 minutes, which we haven't done all year. To lose on a penalty kick is heart breaking and gut wrenching because that's what it came down to. You'd rather lose or you would rather win during the run of play," said head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites. "I thought we were very competitive, but we didn't finish our chances that I thought we had."

Prior to the match, seniors Victoria Kappel, Gina Scaffidi, Skyler Jessop, Lindsey Kuitse, Daniela Salinas, and Meagan Wilson were honored as they donned the Purple and Gold and stepped on the field for Western for the final time.

"At this stage in the game you always run out of proper words to describe these quality human beings. I think they've been everything," Flogaites added about the senior class. "They've put down a huge foundation for us to build on. They've been with the right spirit, the right mind, and they came in with the right type of character and great kids to coach."

The Bison opened up play with two back-to-back shots on goal in the 11th and 12th minutes, forcing Kappel to come up with two stops. Jessop responded with a shot on frame from the top of the box, but could not get her chance past NDSU keeper Sierra Bonham.

The two sides exchanged many chances to get on the board throughout the first half. Gina Scaffidi put a dangerous shot on frame in the 35th minute, but Bonham denied her chance.

Following one of North Dakota State's six first half corner kicks, the Bison looked as if they would score following a header from Brittany Mueller that went wide, and a follow up shot from Amy Yang that sailed high. After 45 minutes of play, the two sides would head into intermission scoreless.

Kappel was called upon early in the second half when she saved the shot that Yang put on target. Two minutes later, she made a diving save to keep the Bison from getting on the board. Just moments later, Michaela Cody and Daniela Salinas fired off shots on goal that were saved by Bonham.

Both teams had plenty of clean looks during the second half, but the defenses held strong. The Bison took 11 second half shots, while the Leathernecks fired off six chances.

In the 89th minute, Jessop looked to put the match away when she fired off a shot from the top of the box that sailed just right of the goal post. With 90 minutes of play in the books, the two sides would head into the first overtime period knotted up at 0-0.

In the 96th minute, the Leathernecks were called for a foul inside the box. NDSU's Lauren Miller set up for a penalty kick and placed her shot past Kappel into the lower left corner of the net and the Bison took the 1-0 victory.

Today's match marks the conclusion of the 2015 campaign.
