Western Drops Four-Set Match to Omaha

Reilly Dunne collects second-career double-double in midweek contest

MACOMB, Ill. – Reilly Dunne recorded her second double-double as a Leatherneck, and Morgyn Bullock led the team in assists for the second consecutive match, as the Leathernecks dropped a 3-1 decision to Omaha on Tuesday, October 20. A victory in the third set was not enough for the Leathernecks (3-20, 1-7 Summit League) in the midweek contest against the Mavs (10-11, 5-3).

"I saw some really good things tonight. I was very happy to see us come back in the third set and be able to bounce back," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "That is something we have talked a lot about this season, not coming out and getting swept. So that was an improvement. I saw really great play out of Reilly Dunne tonight. She came in off the bench and did a great job. She had a double-double and was a big factor for us. So we continued seeing good things and just have to piece it all together all the way through."

After dropping the opening set, 25-14, Western opened the second set with a 3-1 advantage. Krishna Merriman and Lexi Kolschefski opened the scoring with a combination block. Following a Mav point, Western responded with a Melanie Patenaude kill before Omaha committed a hitting error.

After Omaha used a 9-2 advantage to take a 16-9 lead, Western responded with one final run. Trailing 22-13, Western fought until the end thanks to a 5-1 scoring run. Dunne and Jordan Jackson teamed up for a block before Jackson stepped up and delivered an ace. Dunne and Kolschefski each collected kills to aid the WIU run. The comeback fell short as UNO took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-18 victory.

A rejuvenated Leatherneck squad took to the court in the third set, as the team claimed a 25-20 decision. Abby Skryd delivered an ace before Melanie Patenaude and Shiah Sanders tallied kills to put the Purple and Gold ahead 3-0 out of the gate.

Western then built the lead to four at 9-5 with four straight points from the Leathernecks. Kolschefski recorded one of her seven kills to start the run before teaming up with Dunne for a block. Bullock then delivered one of Western's six aces on the night before Dunne added another kill from the outside.

Western once again used a large run to extend the lead in the set, as another 4-0 run put WIU ahead, 21-15. Three different Leathernecks (Dunne, Kolschefski, and Merriman) tallied kills while Merriman and Kolschefski connected on a block. Western claimed the set with a service error by the Mavs.

The comeback effort fell short in the fourth set, as Omaha took the set, 25-13, to claim the match, 3-1.

Dunne's 13 kills were a team best Tuesday evening, and capped the double-double with 10 digs. Kolschefski connected at a team-best .467 clip, registering seven kills on 15 total attacks. Bullock registered 20 assists while Kaili Simmons added 31 digs and three aces.

Western returns to action this Friday, October 23, as Western faces IUPUI on the road. Following the 7 p.m. (CT) first serve, WIU will return home for a Sunday, October 25, match against North Dakota State. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. inside Western Hall.
