Volleyball Drops Four-Set Match to IUPUI

Leathernecks Host North Dakota State on Sunday, October 25

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Western Illinois volleyball team was back in action on Friday, October 23, as the Leathernecks took on the Jaguars in Summit League action. A second set victory for the Leathernecks was not enough as Western dropped a 3-1 decision. WIU falls to 3-21 on the year and 1-8 in league play while the Jaguars improve to 16-7, 7-2.

"We continue to see improvement in our team, but what's hurting us right now is the small things," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "Making sure we don't fall out of position at bad times and cleaning up unforced errors have to be our focus right now. IUPUI does a really great job of staying consistent, and that's something our team has to do a better job on."

After dropping the first set, 25-12, the Purple and Gold stormed back to take the second set by a 25-22 margin. IUPUI took the opening point of the set before the Leathernecks ripped off four consecutive points. Melanie Patenaude recorded a kill and the duo of Lexi Kolschefski and Krishna Merriman teamed up on a block to kick-start the run.

A 4-1 run pushed the WIU lead to 10-5, forcing a Jaguar timeout. Merriman and Shiah Sanders tallied kills, and Jordan Jackson recorded a solo block to force the Jaguars to call timeout. The stoppage in play didn't slow down the Western attack, as the team scored the next three points to open a 13-5 advantage. Kate Hickey delivered an ace after the timeout followed by a combination block by Jackson and Reilly Dunne.

Western once again took advantage of a large scoring run in the set, as a 6-1 run put the Leathernecks firmly ahead by a score of 22-15. The Purple and Gold would close out the set with a kill from Dunne on the outside to even the match at 1-all.

The Leathernecks couldn't sustain the momentum gained from the second set, as IUPUI claimed the third and fourth sets, 25-15, 25-18, to walk away with the 3-1 decision.

Three players tallied 10 or more digs, as Hickey (14), Simmons (14), and Dunne (11) each recorded double figure digs. Morgyn Bullock (19) and Abby Skryd (15) led the team in assists, and Merriman and Jackson tied for the team-high in kills with six.

Western returns to action this Sunday, October 25, as the Leathernecks host North Dakota State inside Western Hall. First serve is slated for 1 p.m. in a match that will be broadcast nationally on ESPN3.
