Volleyball Falls to North Dakota State, 3-0

Leathernecks return to action next weekend, facing Denver and Omaha on the road

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois volleyball team continued its Summit League slate Sunday, October 25, as the Leathernecks hosted North Dakota State inside Western Hall. The annual 'Think Pink' game went the way of the Bison, who took home a 3-0 decision. WIU falls to 3-22 overall and 1-9 in The Summit League while NDSU improved to 15-10, 6-5.

"North Dakota State came out ready to play, and we weren't," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "We have done a really good job in the last couple of weeks of making progress and even though our record doesn't show it, we have seen some positive things happening. Today we came out and took a couple of steps back and weren't ready to go."

Western took an early lead in the opening set, as the Leathernecks used a 3-0 run to take a 10-9 advantage over the visiting Bison. The senior duo of Jordan Jackson and Peyton Crosser teamed up on the first point of the run, collecting a combination block for the Purple and Gold. Freshman Melanie Patenaude proceeded to deliver one of Western's five aces in the match on the next point, and a Bison hitting error pushed Western ahead by a point.

The momentum couldn't be sustained as NDSU took control of the set and claimed the final four points of the set to pick up a 25-15 set victory over WIU. The Bison used the end of the first set as a springboard for the second set, securing a 25-9 set two victory.

In the third set, Western rallied late to put pressure on the Bison. Trailing by a 23-11 margin, Western claimed six of the next seven points to pull within seven. Lexi Kolschefski, who had just entered the game from the bench, opened the WIU run with a kill out of the middle. Kaili Simmons, who led Western with 11 digs on the afternoon, followed Kolschefski's kill with an ace from the service line. Following a block by Jackson and Shiah Sanders, Simmons tallied her second ace to force a Bison timeout.

Following the timeout and a Bison point, Western went back to work. First Jackson connected out of the middle before Abby Skryd rounded out the scoring with an ace. The comeback effort would end there, as NDSU collected the final point for the 25-17 victory.

Sanders led the Western scoring effort Sunday, tallying a team-best six kills. Morgyn Bullock and Skryd handled the setting duties, tallying 15 and 10 assists, respectively.

Western hits the road for a pair of league matches next week, facing Denver on Friday, October 30, before taking on Omaha on Sunday, November 1.
