DENVER – Western Illinois men's basketball dropped its third consecutive Summit League game Wednesday evening (Jan. 14), falling to the Pioneers of Denver on the road, 68-54.

Denver, who was selected to finish second in the preseason poll, improves to 8-10 overall and 2-3 in league play, while the Leathernecks drop to 7-9 on the year and 2-3 in league action.

WIU fell behind by seven points late in the first half before using a 9-2 run to conclude the period and tie the game up, 31-31, heading into the break. The Western run included a pair of free throws from junior forward Jalen Chapman, a four-point play from Garret Covington, and a three-pointer with less then five seconds remaining from sophomore guard Jabari Sandifer.

Western was able to keep things close, 43-40, with 11:12 remaining in the game. DU then rattled off seven consecutive points and took the game's first double-digit lead, 50-40, with less than eight minutes to play. The Pioneers were able to absorb the Leathernecks' attempts at a comeback on their way to their second league victory of the season.

Covington led all scorers with 18 points. The sophomore guard also grabbed five rebounds and recorded a team-high four steals.

Mohamed Conde, a senior forward, finished with nine points and pulled down a team-high six rebounds.

Junior guard Jamie Batish also scored nine points, all via the three-point shot, and had two assists in a team-high 36 minutes played.

Senior guard Remy Roberts-Burnett appeared in his first game since suffering an injury at Akron on Dec. 4, 2014. He played 16 minutes.

DU was led by Cam Griffin who recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

WIU shot better than Denver from three (38.9 percent – 23.1) and the free throw line (85.0 percent – 65.0). Western struggled from the floor overall, however, connecting on just 34.9 percent (15-of-43) of its shots compared to the Pioneers who made 56.5 percent (26-of-46) of their shots from the field.

The Leathernecks continue their road trip at North Dakota State Friday night (Jan. 14) at 7 p.m.
