Bison Down Leathernecks in Fargo

J.C. Fuller scored a season-high 21 points, while Dalan Ancrum notched a season-best 16 points in the defeat

FARGO, N.D. – Career evenings from Western Illinois newcomers J.C. Fuller and Dalan Ancrum Friday evening (Jan. 16) wasn't enough as North Dakota State cruised past the Fighting Leathernecks in Fargo, 61-48.
 
Fuller finished with a game-high 21 points on 9-of-18 shooting from the field and 2-of-5 from long range. He also had a team-high seven rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal.
 
Ancrum finished with 16 points, nine of which came via the three-point shot (3-of-6). The freshman forward played a season-high 31 minutes.
 
Junior forward Tate Stensgaard had six points, connecting on all three of his shots from the field, and grabbed six rebounds in the loss.
 
NDSU opened the game on a 9-0 run, putting Western in a hole early. The Leathernecks were able to cut their deficit to three at the 12:55 mark of the opening period, but NDSU absorbed WIU's push and took an 8-point lead into the break, 33-25.
 
The second period was all Bison as well, as the defending Summit League champion's raced past the Leathernecks for their fourth league victory of the season.
 
NDSU improved to 4-1 in league action and 12-6 overall on the year, while Western Illinois dropped to 7-10 overall and 2-4 in league play.
 
Free throws were the difference as the Bison made 16 of its 23 attempts, while WIU made two of only three total attempts.
 
Both teams made 20 field goals in the game, and the Leathernecks had six three-pointers made compared to the NDSU's five makes from long range.
 
WIU had seven more assists than NDSU, 12-5, and committed only one more turnover, 9-8.
 
North Dakota State had three players score in double figures led by Lawrence Alexander who finished with 17 points.
 
The Leathernecks return to Macomb for their next three contests beginning with a game versus South Dakota on Thursday, Jan. 22, at 7 p.m.
