Leathernecks Fall in Four Against Omaha

Ann Miller paces team with 20 kills.

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois volleyball team fell to 0-2 in conference action Sunday afternoon, losing a 3-1 decision to Omaha. The defeat dropped Western to 2-13 (0-2), while the Mavericks improved to 6-9 (1-1).

After the match started with Omaha taking the first set, 25-14, the Leathernecks stormed back to even that match 1-1 with a set two victory. Western used a 3-0 run, capped by a Peyton Crosser kill to build an early 8-6 advantage in the second. The push forced a quick timeout from the Mavs. From there, the two teams would battle into the late stages of the set.

With Omaha leading 23-22, Ann Miller recorded one of her match-high 20 kills to pull the Purple and Gold within one. A few plays later Jordan Jackson recorded one of her seven kills to even the score at 25. Peyton Crosser gave the Leathernecks set point at 27-26 with a kill from the outside. Mallory Gibson and Melanie Miller sealed the second set for Western with a combination block to give the Leathernecks a 28-26 victory.

The final two frames belonged to the Mavericks. Western used a 5-0 run in the middle of the third set to pull within two at 18-16, and the two teams would remain close for the duration of the set. Mallory Gibson gave the Purple and Gold the lead at 22-21 with a kill off of the Fournier assist, but Omaha would come away with a 26-24 victory. Western led for almost the entire fourth set before Omaha stormed back. The Leathernecks led early, 7-2, and led by five again when they used a 4-0 to go up 12-7. A kill from Crosser and an Omaha hitting error gave Western a 20-16 lead. Omaha ended the match on a 9-2 run, closing out the Leathernecks, 25-22.

Ann Miller led the attack, posting a double-double with 20 kills and 10 digs. The 20 kills move Miller into seventh place on the all-time kills list (1,124), surpassing Monique Huston (1,114). Samantha Fournier added a double-double as well with 41 assists and 14 digs. Molly Murphy anchored the back line, registering 20 digs.
