Women's Soccer Drops Non-Conference Finale to Panthers

The Leathernecks allowed two second half goals in the defeat.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois women's soccer ended non-conference play with a 2-0 loss to Northern Iowa on Sunday (Sept. 28).

"When you take the majority of your shots from inside the six, someone has to put it in the back of the net," said head coach Ted Flogaites. "We don't care how it goes in the back of the net, as long as it crosses the line. We're trying to be too cute."

Western Illinois (1-9) had two chances within the first five minutes of play. Gina Scaffidi nearly played Sarah Hall in behind the Northern Iowa defense, but Panther goalkeeper Whitney Blunt was able to collect the ball before Hall could reach it. Shortly after, Western earned a corner but it was played out for a goal kick.

The Leathernecks had another dangerous opportunity 13 minutes in, when Scaffidi again put the Panther backline under pressure with a ball over the top that found Skyler Jessop. The junior took a shot with her first touch, but Blunt was up to the task. Three minutes later, Western made Blunt work again when Jessop and Hall combined, but again the UNI 'keeper made the save.

The pressure continued as the Leathernecks earned two more corners by the 25th minute with the latter resulting in a long distance shot from Tyra Markey. Jessop was able to split the Panther backline thanks to a Sarah Wright through ball but the forward's shot rolled just past the post as the match remained scoreless.

Northern Iowa took the lead three minutes into the second half. After earning a corner, Western's clearance went only as far as Maggie Riley who played it out wide to Charlotte Jones. On her first touch, Jones's cross found the head of Sarah McHugh, giving the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

The Leathernecks almost drew level four minutes later after earning a set piece 25 yards from goal. Jessop lined up over the ball but her right-footed effort went wide of goal. Jessop had another opportunity to tie the match in the 57th minute of play off a flicked-on header from Hall. Jessop's shot was blocked and wound up at the feet of Nicole Beer, whose effort went high.

The Panthers doubled their advantage in the 62nd when Lexi Harris could not control the initial cross. With the ball inside the six-yard box, Northern Iowa forced Harris to make two saves before Brady Clark put the Panthers in front by two.

Western had a pair of chances in the 73rd minute when Hall's blocked shot fell to Daniela Salinas. The junior's shot was saved by Blunt. The Leathernecks had opportunities late to cut into the deficit as Scaffidi and Hall both had shots go wide of goal.

Western recorded 21 shots in the contest and Harris, making her first career start, made four saves.

The Leathernecks begin Summit League play on Friday (Oct. 3) against North Dakota State in Fargo, North Dakota. Western then travels to Brookings, South Dakota on Sunday (Oct. 5) to face the Jackrabbits of South Dakota.
