Wright Scores Winner as Leathernecks Defeat Bison in Overtime

Sarah Wright and Amy Bennett scored for Western Illinois in the win.

FARGO, N.D. – Sarah Wright's winner four minutes into extra time gave Western Illinois a 2-1 victory over North Dakota State on Friday (Oct. 3). The Fighting Leathernecks are now 2-9 overall and 1-0 in Summit League play.

"I thought it was a win we deserved and in three straight matches we have played better and better," said head coach Ted Flogaites. "Our football is becoming tighter, cleaner and more intricate, but our will to win was the intangible that pushed us over the finish line tonight. Amy took her chance very well, and Tyra's ball into Sarah Wright was as tasty as can be. Wright made the finish look easy but it was anything but, she had a lot to do to take down the service cleanly. The defending was top notch, and above all this was a team win, a win that indicated that we are together. It's a great way to start off conference play. Everyone keeps counting us out because of our overall record, but conference play is a clean slate and no one but the players on the team know how big our hearts are and how large our belief is."

Western looked to make its mark on the match from the opening whistle as the Leathernecks earned six corners within the first 25 minutes of action. Both Gina Scaffidi and Tyra Markey forced Bison goalkeeper Sierra Bonham to make saves during that time.

28 minutes into the match, Amy Bennett's third career goal put Western in front with a strike from 18 yards out. The goal was Bennett's first since the 2011 season.

The Leatherneck defense would see the lead through until halftime, allowing only four shots in the opening 45 minutes and none requiring Victoria Kappel to make a save.

Kappel was forced into action early in the second half, however, as Amy Yang forced the senior to make her first save of the match. Just moments later, Jaclyn Scanlan leveled the match for NDSU. Kappel would be called upon again ten minutes later, keeping the score at 1-1 with another save.

North Dakota State continued to put Western under pressure, requiring Kappel to make two additional saves by the 70th minute.

Brianna Hughes nearly put Western in front after 75 minutes of play, but Bonham made her third save of the match to deny Hughes. Neither side was able find a winner as Kappel made five saves in the second half to force overtime.

Western needed only one chance in extra time to leave Fargo with a 2-1 victory as Markey found Sarah Wright for the winner.

The win is Western's first in Fargo, North Dakota since 2007.

Western Illinois looks to move to 2-0 in Summit League play as the Leathernecks travel to Brookings, South Dakota on Sunday (Oct. 5).
