Leathernecks Drop Heartbreaker in Brookings

Western Illinois lost 2-1 in overtime to South Dakota State

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Fighting Leatherneck women's soccer dropped a 2-1 Summit League match in overtime to South Dakota State on Sunday (Oct. 5).

"I thought we were excellent in the first half and deserved our lead," said head coach Ted Flogaites. "The wind wreaked havoc in the second half and we didn't deal with it well. Give them credit for the win but it was absolutely heartbreaking to lose in overtime on a deflection. Shot count aside, that was a match there for the taking. I feel like we left points on the table and we had no business dropping points. We have a lot of games left to play."

It didn't take long for Western (2-10, 1-1) to find the back of the net as Skyler Jessop found Tyra Markey who put Western in front just four minutes in. The Jackrabbits first effort required Victoria Kappel to make her first save of the match.

Markey thought she had scored her second goal in just the 10th minute of play but her chance was blocked. Kappel was called upon again and would close out the half with three saves in the first 45 minutes.

Daniela Salinas found space in the 36th minute, forcing Elisa Stamatakis to make a save, keeping the Leatherneck lead at 1-0 heading into halftime.

The Jackrabbits equalized 59 minutes in, thanks to an Alyssa Brazil 17-yard strike. Western's defense was put under pressure for the remainder of the half as SDSU searched for a winner. The Jackrabbits sent 13 shots towards the net in the second half.

SDSU would score just over one minute into overtime, for the victory.

Western Illinois returns home to face defending Summit League champions Denver on Sunday (Oct. 12). The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
