Leathernecks Come Up Short Against Pioneers

Senior goalkeeper Victoria Kappel made 10 saves.

MACOMB, Ill. – An early second half goal was the difference as Western Illinois dropped a 1-0 decision to Denver on Sunday (Oct. 12). The Leathernecks are 2-11 overall and 1-2 in Summit League play.

Denver earned an early set piece just outside the Western penalty area within the first minute of play but Sam Harder's shot was blocked by the wall and cleared away by the Western defense. The Leathernecks earned a dangerous set piece opportunity of their own in the fourth minute, 20 yards from net. Skyler Jessop's shot was touched away by Pioneer goalkeeper Tina Vargas.

The Pioneers had another opportunity from a free kick 19 minutes in. With Harder over the ball from the left side of the box, her curled effort hit the crossbar. Victoria Kappel would make her first crucial save of the match in the 20th minute, denying Lauren Conley. Kappel made 10 saves in the match.

Denver would send 16 shots towards Western's net in the first 45 minutes of play, but only seven required saves from Kappel. The senior was called upon to make one more, big save in the first half when Anna Willis was on the other end of a Stella Norman corner. Willis' shot was on target, but the Leatherneck goalkeeper's positioning was perfect, allowing her to make the save and keeping the match scoreless going into halftime.

Denver scored the opener as the game entered the 61st minute. Jocelyn Loomis switched the point of attack to Norman, who crossed the ball into Willis. The forward's header found the back of the net, putting Denver in front 1-0.

Western's best chance of the second half came in the 80th minute when Sarah Hall played Jessop behind the Pioneer backline. After Jessop was slowed down by a pair of Pioneers, Sarah Wright found Hall in the box. The senior took one touch before her shot was denied by Vargas.

Western Illinois continues Summit League play on Friday (Oct. 17) at Fort Wayne. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
