Leathernecks Held to Draw in Fort Wayne

Western Illinois and Fort Wayne played to a scoreless draw on Friday (Oct. 17).

FORT WAYNE, Ill – Despite a strong performance from Western Illinois in attack, the Leathernecks (2-11-1, 1-2-1) were held to a scoreless draw on Friday (Oct. 17) in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Western Illinois outshot Fort Wayne (2-11-1, 0-2-2) 18-11 in the match, putting 10 shots on net.

"I thought we were fantastic from start to finish and dominated every phase of the match," said head coach Ted Flogaites. "It's a much needed point but I most certainly think that the performance merited three points. We did everything but finish. We had a 13-1 advantage on corner kicks, and passed the ball with a real sharpness tonight. The players did the program and the jersey proud tonight and I am very proud of them."

Having scored first in three of the previous five matches, the Leathernecks looked to continue that trend as Sarah Hall recorded the Leathernecks first shot within the first 15 seconds of play. Neither keeper was forced to make a save until the 17th minute, when Lindsay Swope's effort on frame put Victoria Kappel to work. Mayson Whitman quickly followed but her shot was blocked.

Hall continued to wreak havoc on the Mastodon defense, forcing Sam Pavlika to make a save in the 23rd minute and again in the 28th minute. Western earned three consecutive corners in three minutes, but were unable to record a shot during that time. Hall and Western would have another opportunity in the 36th minute, once again from a corner. Sarah Wright's delivery into the box found the head of Hall, but it went over the bar for a goal kick. Tyra Markey would have the final opportunity of the half for Western, but her attempt was saved.

Wright and fellow senior Amy Bennett both recorded shots in the first five minutes of the second half as the Leathernecks searched for the opener, with Bennett's shot leading to Western's eighth corner of the match. Kappel would not have to make her second save until the 52nd minute of play and would quickly make her third in the 64th minute.
The Leathernecks were awarded a corner 83 minutes into the match and it nearly put them in front. With Wright on the delivery, her service found Daniela Salinas. The junior's shot forced Pavlika to make a vital save late in the match, denying Salinas of a potential game-winner. Salinas had yet another chance turned away by Pavlika with just 15 seconds remaining in regulation.

The match would not have a winner after 90 minutes and would go into overtime. In the first ten minute period, Devan Jones had a shot saved just 90 seconds in, the only chance for either side. Both sides would search for the winner but neither would put a shot on frame as the match would end in a scoreless draw.

The Leathernecks return home on Friday (Oct. 24) to face Oral Roberts.
