Hall Scores Twice as Leathernecks Earn Victory Over Oral Roberts

Western Illinois moved in front of IUPUI in the conference standings as the chase for fourth place continues.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois secured three valuable points as the Leathernecks defeated Oral Roberts 3-2 on Friday (Oct. 24). Sarah Hall scored twice as Western Illinois (3-11-1) moved to 2-2-1 in league play with three matches remaining.

"We were a little bit more composed. In the past we rushed our chances," said head coach Ted Flogaites. "In general we were more composed and took our chances better. We spent a lot of time working on finishing and we also talked about getting diagonally at goal instead of taking the long route. We had to win today. In order to be in the title race, we had to win today. There was lot of urgency for us today because it was a huge game for us to climb the charts. We knew we had a great opportunity at hand."

Both teams exchanged chances early in the first four minutes before Oral Roberts had a dangerous set piece opportunity in the ninth minute. The Golden Eagles managed a half-chance, allowing Western to take the lead 11 minutes into the match on a mistake from the Golden Eagle backline. Daniela Salinas stole the ball from an ORU defender and two touches later, found the back of the net to give Western a 1-0 lead. The goal was Salinas' first at Western Illinois.

Oral Roberts forced Victoria Kappel to make four more saves before Western doubled its advantage. The Leathernecks put Sarah Hall over the top, allowing the senior to work past two ORU defenders. Hall's shot from a difficult angle caught a deflection and floated over Erb, finding the far post and narrowly getting over the line. The goal was Hall's second of the year.

The Golden Eagles responded just three minutes later as Maria Stardahl sent a diagonal ball to Cheyenne Diggs on the right side of the box. Digg's left-footed shot curled past Kappel, cutting Western's lead in half.

The first chance of the second half went to the Golden Eagles, who made the most of it. Stardahl collected her second assist of the match after dribbling past a pair of defenders and finding Amanda Dial on the left side of the box. Dial took her chance cleanly, beating Kappel near post and bringing the match level.

The Leathernecks reclaimed the lead in the 76th minute when senior Gina Scaffidi played Hall in behind the ORU defense. Hall calmly put away her second goal of the match and put Western back in front 3-2. Western's lead was almost short lived, as Megan Giles thought she had scored but her shot was cleared off the line by Carly Hoffman.

The Leathernecks were able to see out the final ten minutes of the match, securing three points and a 3-2 victory.

Western Illinois travels to Indianapolis, Ind. for a match against IUPUI on Sunday (Oct. 26) at 12 p.m. The Jaguars were off on Friday and carry a 2-3 Summit League record into the match.
