Leathernecks Fall 2-1 at IUPUI

Western Illinois drops below the Jaguars in the league standings with two matches remaining.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Sarah Hall's late goal nearly sparked a comeback, but Western Illinois fell 2-1 to IUPUI on Sunday (Oct. 26). The Leathernecks (3-12-1, 2-3-1) are currently sixth in the league standings.

"Credit to them for their work and hard running off the ball," said head coach Ted Flogaites. "As a team I don't think we matched their desire and energy. I don't think we ever showed up in the match, aside from the final 8 minutes after we scored, and then we left it all to do with limited time. I wouldn't say they were the better team but I did think they wanted it more. We will have to go 2-0 down the stretch and root for some things to happen. I am not sure how we put in a performance like that in a match of that magnitude with so many implications for the post season."

The Jaguars (5-9-3, 3-3) attempted to put the Leatherneck defense on their heels early, sending four shots toward Western's net in the first ten minutes. Amy Bennett sparked Western's attack five minutes in, finding space and forcing Catherine Schmidt to make her first save of the afternoon.

Neither side would get another clean look at goal until the 25th minute when IUPUI's Grace Perkowitz headed a cross toward Victoria Kappel who made the save. Kappel made four saves in the first 45 minutes for Western Illinois.

Sarah Hall and Brianna Hughes both had chances to put Western in front on the road, but both had their efforts go wide of goal, keeping the match scoreless. Taylor Heidorn gave IUPUI the lead 35 minutes in, finishing off a pass from Alyssa Fox from eight yards out.

Western conceded a second goal in the 74th minute. Western cut into the lead when Hall took advantage of a failed clearance and deposited her fourth goal of the season in the 83rd minute. Abby Moore and Lindsey Kuitse had chances late, but both shots were blocked.

The loss puts Western Illinois two points behind IUPUI for fifth place with two matches remaining for both teams. Omaha, currently in third place, is ineligible for postseason play.

The Leathernecks look to jump back in front of IUPUI during the final weekend of the season. Western Illinois welcomes Omaha and South Dakota to Macomb. The Leathernecks and Mavericks will meet on Friday (Oct. 31) at 3 p.m. The regular season concludes on Sunday (Nov. 2) at 1 p.m. against the Coyotes.
