Hall Leads Leathernecks to 2-1 Win Over Omaha

The senior has now scored six goals this season and five in the past three matches.

MACOMB, Ill. – Sarah Hall continued her impressive form with two more goals on Friday (Oct. 31) as the Leathernecks defeated Omaha 2-1. The win keeps Western's (4-12-1, 3-3-1) tournament hopes alive heading into the final regular season match.

"It was the best performance of the year," said head coach Ted Flogaites. "I thought top to bottom, we were the better team. Sarah Hall had a career day and the attackers looked dangerous every time they touched the ball. Sarah Wright was an absolute monster in the middle of the pitch and the defending was fantastic. It was a complete team performance and the most complete 90 minutes we've played all year."

Both sides were forced to overcome 20 mph winds during the contest as neither side was able to create a dangerous opportunity until the 21st minute. Going with the wind in the first half, Hall created space and forced Haley Shelton to tip her shot off the post. On the rebound, Skyler Jessop put away what she thought was the first goal of the match, but the flag had gone up signaling offside. Hall had another attempt two minutes later stopped by Shelton.

The half would end scoreless with neither side seeing a clear goal scoring opportunity in the remaining minutes.

The Mavericks had a chance to jump in front three minutes into the second half when Chelsi Rohloff was one-on-one with Victoria Kappel, but the Leatherneck 'keeper kept the match scoreless. One minute later, Omaha earned a free kick from 20 yards out. Hannah Wampler took the set piece and scored her fourth goal of the year to put Omaha in front 1-0.

Hall scored the equalizer for Western on a penalty kick in the 54th minute. The goal was Hall's fifth of the season and the third converted penalty of her career.
Jessop was close to putting the Leathernecks in front nine minutes later, chipping the ball over Shelton at the top of the 18. Omaha's backline was able to recover, clearing the ball off the line.

Sarah Wright found Hall on a nicely timed run and pass, putting Hall behind the Maverick defense. Hall scored her second goal of the match, sending her shot into the bottom corner of the net. Hall has now scored five times in the previous three matches. Her six goals in 2014 are the most in a single season during her career.

Omaha's best chance to equalize came in the 78th minute, when Layla Ashouri beat Kappel but her shot hit the post. Ten minutes later, Jessop almost put the match away for good, but the junior could not beat Shelton one-on-one.

Western Illinois plays host to South Dakota on the final day of the regular season. The Leathernecks and Coyotes are set to begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Nov. 2). Five Leatherneck seniors will also be honored prior to the start of the match.
