Late Goal Sends Western to 2-1 Defeat

Skyler Jessop scored her first goal of the season in the loss.

MACOMB, Ill. - The Leathernecks took an early 1-0 lead but a late goal by Green Bay gave Western Illinois a 2-1 loss on Sunday (Sept. 21). The Fighting Leathernecks fell to 1-8 in 2014.

"I don't have words for the result but I thought we were very good," said head coach Ted Flogaites. "I thought we played brilliant and to lose on an error the way we did is very difficult to swallow. We created loads of chances and if you convert them it's a very different game. From an effort standpoint, I thought we gave everything."

The Leathernecks scored the opener in the 11th minute of play when Skyler Jessop beat her mark and found enough space to beat the Green Bay goalkeeper far post from 18 yards out.

The Phoenix answered just four minutes later, when Heidi Hartmann headed home a cross from Elise Olson. Green Bay would have another opportunity midway through the half, but Hartmann's free kick went over the bar. Green Bay almost grabbed the lead on another set piece, but Hartmann's header hit off the post.

The Leathernecks responded with a dangerous opportunity, as Jessop was able to play Brianna Hughes behind the Green Bay defense, but her solo effort was saved.

Western continued to press forward as the first half came to a close, earning a free kick just outside the box, but Sarah Wright's strike went high.

The Leathernecks had a pair of opportunities 56 minutes into the match when Hughes again found herself behind the Green Bay backline, but her near post shot was saved. One minute later, Hughes found Tyra Markey, but Katy Pilarzyk denied the sophomore.

The Phoenix took the lead on a miscue defensively from the Leathernecks in the 78th minute. On a pass back to the goalkeeper, Karina Fredette pressured Victoria Kappel and deflected the goalkeeper's clearance into the net.

Western Illinois responded immediately, as Sarah Hall almost leveled the match, but her shot was deflected, resulting in a corner for Western. On the corner, Alexis Morales found the ball at her feet but her effort sailed high. After winning the ball back, Daniela Salinas had a shot saved.

The Leathernecks have one more non-conference match on Sunday (Sept. 28) against Northern Iowa before the start of Summit League play. The match against the Panthers is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
