Chelsea Lynes Nominated for 'NCAA Woman of the Year' Award

The graduate from Woodstock, Ontario was recently named the 'Senior Female Student-Athlete of the Year' by WIU.

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois' Chelsea Lynes has been nominated for the 2014 NCAA 'Woman of the Year' Award.

"Being WIU's nominee for the 'NCAA Woman of the Year' is the icing on the cake for a great young lady, who had a great career academically, athletically and personally at WIU," said Assistant Athletics Director and Senior Woman's Administrator Lisa Melz-Jennings. "Chelsea will excel no matter where life takes her, and she will be a great role model to the females she has contact with."

According to the official release from the NCAA, Lynes joins 446 female student-athletes from Divisions I, II and III who excelled in academics, athletics, service and leadership during their collegiate careers.

The Woodstock, Ontario native was nominated originally by Western and joins Amanda Hyde (Fort Wayne), Kristen Hamilton (Denver), Ashley Tingelstad (NDSU), Sami Spenner (Omaha) as the nominees from The Summit League's member institutions.

The current 446 candidates will be narrowed down to the top 30, as the selection committee will select the top 10 candidates from each division. From the remaining 30, the NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will vote to select the 2014 NCAA Woman of the Year.

In 2014, Lynes was named All-Summit League in the 800 meters and the 4x400 meter relay during the indoor season and followed that with another All-League honor in the outdoor 4x400 event. The honors add to the senior's list of accomplishments including three program records in the 600 meter run, the 800 meter run and the 1,000 meter run.

A four-time All-League honoree, Lynes has also been named to The Summit League's Academic All-League team on three occasions while earning Distinguished Scholar honors on the Summit League's Academic Honor Roll on five occasions.

Lynes ended her career at WIU with the Senior Female Student-Athlete of the Year Award, given out annually by the Western Illinois Athletic Department to the top male and female student-athletes.
