DENVER, Colo. – The Western Illinois women's tennis team saw their season come to an end during the opening round of the 2014 Summit League Championships. Western dropped a 4-0 decision to Fort Wayne on Friday morning (April 25).
In doubles play, Andriana Johnson and Jamee Hale were trailing 3-5 in the number two doubles match before play was halted. The number one team of Nicole Jones and Jenna Wallace, and the number three team of Ese Davis and Melissa Alger both lost their doubles match 1-8.
Fort Wayne's Ella Norgren defeated Jessica Callahan at number three singles 6-0, 6-0. Hale was also swept in her number six singles match. Sofia Sorokina defeated Johnson at number four singles 6-0, 6-1 to clinch the match and advance to the semifinals.
Wallace won the first game of her match (number one singles) against Summit League Player of the Year Mayu Sato, but trailed 3-5 when the match was called.
Jones lost the first set 2-6 to Miloslava Shustova when her number two singles match was called. Davis lost the first set 1-6 and trailed 1-5 in the second set at the match conclusion.
Western finished the year 0-19 overall and returns six of the seven players (five being underclassmen) off this year's team.
