Western Illinois Men’s Basketball Falls at Memphis Tuesday

The Fighting Leathernecks fall to 4-6 on the season after the 78-51 loss to the Memphis Tigers

MEMPHIS – The Western Illinois men's basketball squad dropped its final nonconference road game of the season Tuesday evening (Dec. 23) to the Memphis Tigers, 78-51.
 
Memphis used a 16-0 run during the middle portion of the first half to gain a 20-point advantage over WIU before taking a 41-14 lead into the half.
 
The Leathernecks were able to cut their deficit to fewer than 20 points after a 9-0 run early in the second half, but the Tigers absorbed Western's run on their way to their fourth consecutive victory.
 
WIU falls to 4-6 overall on the season after the loss, while Memphis, who was picked to finish third in the American Athletic Conference, improves to 7-4 overall.
 
J.C. Fuller was the only Leatherneck to finish with 10-plus points. The junior guard scored 13 points, collected four rebounds and had three assists in a team-high 34 minutes of action.
 
Sophomore guard Jabari Sandifer and senior forward Mohamed Conde each notched seven points. Sandifer also dished out a team-best four assists, while Conde led the team in rebounds with six.
 
Adding nine points and four rebounds was junior forward Tate Stensgaard, while fellow junior forward Jalen Chapman contributed six points and five rebounds off of the bench.
 
Memphis had five players tally double figures in the scoring column. Calvin Godfrey, Austin Nichols and Nick King each had 12 points, while Trahson Burrell and Pookie Powell both recorded 10.
 
It was a tale of two halves for the Leathernecks in regards to making shots. The Leathernecks struggled from the field in the first half making just 4-of-30 (13.3%) shots before connecting on 14-of-29 (48.3%) from the floor in the second. For the game WIU shot 30.5% (18-59).
 
The Tigers made 50 percent (31-62) of their attempts from the field during the game, and 44 of their 78 points were scored in the paint.
 
Western Illinois returns to action Dec. 30 when the Leathernecks play host to Anderson (Ind.) for their final nonconference game of the season. The contest is slated to tipoff at 7:30 p.m. following the WIU women's game against Milwaukee.
