MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois pulled away from Alabama State early in a 78-68 Leathernecks win Saturday night (Dec. 13) inside Western Hall.

WIU used a 13-0 run to give the Leathernecks a 15-point advantage, 19-4, midway through the first half. Western was able to absorb all of Alabama State's scoring runs, never allowing the Hornets to get any closer than nine points throughout the game.

"Give Alabama State credit. They're a good team," said head coach Billy Wright. "They have size, they have depth, they have quickness, they have length, and they're a great team. We beat a great team tonight. At both ends of the floor, against a quality team, I think this is the best game we've played. They were picked to win the SWAC and I think our guys are starting to understand what it takes to compete at this level, and play the way I want them to play at both ends of the floor."

The Leathernecks, who have won back-to-back games for the first time this season and improve to 4-5 overall, had four players finish in double figures.

Alabama State had two players finish with double-doubles (18 points and 10 rebounds) in Maurice Strong and Luther Page. The Hornets, who were picked to win the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), fall to 3-4 on the year.

Leading the team in scoring for the eighth time this season was sophomore guard Garret Covington who recorded 18 points. Covington also had three assists and two steals.

Junior guard J.C. Fuller, a native of Sioux City, Iowa, finished with 15, tying his season high in points, while also tallying six assists with no turnovers.

Finishing with a career-high 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting was Mohamed Conde. The Belleville, Mich. native also grabbed eight rebounds and had two steals.

Jabari Sandifer, a sophomore guard, had another stuffed stat line Saturday, finishing with 11 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and two steals.

WIU shot better than ASU from the field (45.3 - 42.6), the three-point line (36.4 - 15.8) and the free throw line (70.6 - 46.7). The Leathernecks also had 20 assists compared to the Hornets' 12.

Western Illinois has the week off before traveling to Tennessee for a December 23rd tilt at Memphis.
