Women's Tennis Starts Warhawk/Panther Invitational With a Pair of Doubles Victories

Nicole Jones won her opening round match in singles play as well as picking up a victory in No. 2 doubles.

WHITEWATER, Wis. – Fighting Leatherneck women's tennis ­started the Warhawk/Panther Invitational with a pair of double victories on Friday (Oct. 3). Nicole Jones also picked up a singles victory for Western Illinois.

Doubles play was the focus of day one of action in Whitewater, Wisconsin. Courtney Lubbers and Jenna Wallace battled in their first round matchup, but fell 8-6 to the hosts. The duo fell in a tiebreaker to Cardinal Stritch but avenged the loss with an 8-6 victory to claim seventh place.

Arianna Demos and Nicole Jones were defeated by the hosts in No. 2 doubles, but bounced back, claiming an 8-4 victory over Green Bay. Demos and Jones ultimately took second place in the consolation bracket after falling in the championship.

In No. 3 doubles, Ese Davis and Andriana Johnson fell in all three rounds of doubles action.

Jones was the lone Leatherneck to win in singles action, defeating Aerielle Pendleton of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

The Warhawk/Panther Invitational continues Saturday (Oct. 4).
