EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Chelsea Lynes finished sixth in the women's 5K and Mark Holt finished eighth in the men's 8K to lead the Leathernecks in Friday's SIU-Edwardsville Challenge. Both the men and women finished fourth overall out of seven and five teams respectively.
"The men ran okay, but missing the first race definitely showed on the men's side," said head coach David Beauchem. "Our score wasn't where we are really, we just got out way too slow and way too far back. The women were better, they got out and held their ground. Cheslea moved up into the top ten. Angela Brown had one of the best races she's ever had."
Holt finished the 8K race in 26:05.5, 20 seconds ahead of teammates Zach Wiedeman and Chad French. Lynes finished with a time of 19:08.2. Madison Lefler and Lydia Smith finished 14th and 16th, respectively.
"Chad French got out more in the back but moved through and ran a pretty good first collegiate race," Beauchem said. "Mark Holt got into the front of the race and ran in second place for a significant part of the race. It's a good start, it's not where we want to be. We're going to get our training adjusted and set from the first race."
The Leathernecks will have three weeks off before their next race, the Notre Dame Invitational on October 4th.
