MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois men's tennis dropped a match 7-0 to Bradley on Tuesday (April 17) despite playing several close matches. The loss brings the Leathernecks to 4-14 on the season.
Patrick Hammers at No. 1 singles and Jim Capalbo in the No. 3 singles spot fought hard at each position but ultimately fell 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) and 7-6 (7-1), 6-0, respectively. In No. 2 singles play, Ben Yue played a close first set before dropping off in the second for a 6-4, 6-1 loss. At the No. 6 position, Jesus Roman also had a tight opening set but was defeated in the end 6-3, 6-1. Andrew Yopp dropped his match at No. 4 6-0, 6-1 and Daniel Sweeney fell 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot to round out singles play.
In doubles action, the No. 1 tandem of Hammers and Yue was defeated 8-3 by the Braves, while the No. 2 duo of Capalbo and Yopp and the No. 3 pair of Sweeney and Roman fell 8-0 and 8-1, respectively.
The Fighting Leathernecks return to the court on Sunday (April 22) for the final match of the regular season against Summit League member UMKC. The match will determine whether or not Western Illinois will receive a bid to the 2012 Summit League Championships. First serve is set for 10 a.m. at Brophy Courts in Macomb, Ill.
