MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois Women's Tennis team got itself back in the win column with a dominating 7-0 victory over Roosevelt University on Sunday, April 10 at the Brophy Courts.
The Fighting Leathernecks (2-15) did not drop a set in the victory as they snapped a 14-match losing streak. Western Illinois picked up wins in each singles match and all three doubles matches.
"Our players had a real desire to put a win on the board today," said head coach Chris Kane. "They had a good attitude going into the match, and they dominated the play."
In singles play, Marcela Brandao picked up an easy victory at the No. 1 spot (6-1, 6-2) while Jill Furlong shut out her opponent (6-0, 6-0) at the No. 2 position.
Amy Unzicker was victorious at No. 3 singles (6-2, 6-0) and Claire Griffin defeated her opponent in straight sets at No. 4 (6-1, 6-0). Melissa Kaufmann won by default at No. 5 and Kara Chicoine dominated her match at No. 6 singles (6-0, 6-1)
In doubles play, Western's No. 1 duo of Brandao/Furlong won easily (8-1) while the No. 2 tandem of Griffin/Unzicker was victorious (8-5). In No. 3 doubles, the Leatherneck team of Kaufmann/Chicoine picked up a shutout win (8-0).
"It was great to see Melissa Kaufmann and Kara Chicoine earn their first wins for our team," said Kane. "They are hard workers, excellent students, and a credit to our program here at Western Illinois."
The Leathernecks will return to Summit League action when they travel to Brookings, S.D. for a conference cluster against IPFW, South Dakota State, Centenary and IUPUI this coming weekend (April 14-16).
