VERMILLION, S.D. – Jenny Green and Jill Kevorkian both tallied a goal, but two scores were not enough as Western Illinois dropped a 3-2, double-overtime decision at South Dakota on Monday, Sept. 6.
"South Dakota came out and played us really hard again," said head coach Tony Guinn. "This game was a little different in that we were ahead for a time, unlike our last meeting, but they never gave up. We had some good chances to score today and we just need to focus on finishing those chances in the future."
Neither team was able to find the net in the first half, but the offense came alive in the second half when the teams combined for four goals in the final 30 minutes of regulation.
The Coyotes (2-2-1) struck first when Jenny Teslow scored in the 58th minute, but the Fighting Leathernecks (1-3-1) would tie the match moments later when Jordan Spaciel found Kevorkian for the equalizer in the 62nd minute.
Western Illinois would seize momentum in the 77th minute when Green knocked in her second goal of the season to give Western a 2-1 advantage. Katie Condon was credited with the assist on the go-ahead goal.
South Dakota would strike again in the 86th minute to tie the match at 2-2 on Erin Bello's goal and send the match to overtime.
Neither side was able to capitalize on a chance in the first overtime period as the Leathernecks recorded the only shot on target in the first ten minutes of extra time.
The Coyotes would put the game away when Katie Quinones scored her first goal of the season in the 104th minute to give South Dakota the victory.
"We played against a really well coached team today," Guinn said. "They (South Dakota) will be a great addition to The Summit League next season."
Western Illinois outshot South Dakota by a 25 to 18 margin, including 13 to six in shots on goal. The Leathernecks were awarded seven corners to the Coyotes' eight and were called for four fouls to South Dakota's nine.
Jessica Walsh (1-1-0) took the loss, allowing three goals in 104:04 minutes in the net. She made six saves on the day, including one in the 88th minute to send the match to overtime.
Spaciel led the Leathernecks with eight shots in the match while Diershow, Green and Kellie Julius each had three shots on goal.
Western will return home to face SIU-Edwardsville at 5 p.m. on Friday.
