Shreveport,
La. - The
Western Illinois volleyball team collected a season-high eight service aces and began its Summit League season with a 3-0 win at Centenary Friday night at the Fitness Center.
Western Illinois won by scores of 25-20, 25-17 and
25-12 to improve to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in Summit League play. With the win,
the Fighting Leathernecks pushed their all-time record against Centenary to 15-0.
"Our
serving game was excellent tonight and we controlled the match with solid
service pressure," said head coach Kym McKay. "Centenary did a great job of
keeping us off balance tonight but we kept our composure when the score got tight."
Junior Allison Gilbert
led the Leathernecks on offense for the third consecutive match, recording a
game-high 18 kills with a career-high .531 attack percentage. Gilbert owns a
team-high 91 kills on the season and improved her season attack percentage
(.327) 36 points Friday night.
"It
has been great to watch Allison (Gilbert) put together three consecutive strong matches," said McKay. "She has been taking strong swings and playing with
a lot of confidence lately. Our middle hitters (Cait Egan and Katie Hosteng)
were very active tonight and they created more scoring opportunities for
Allison."
In
the first set, Western used a 7-0 run with senior Ellen Miller serving to pull
away from a 14-14 tie and win the set 25-20. Centenary came back to knot the
second set at 17-17 but Western tallied eight straight points with junior Brooke
Stittleburg serving to take the set 25-17. With sophomore Bridget Murphy
serving early in the third set, Western raced out to a commanding 14-2 and hit
.312 to easily capture the final set 25-12.
Freshman
setter Heather Smith had 32 assists, six digs and two block assists to record
her fifth 30-plus assist performance in six appearances this season.
Stittleburg, who was recently named a Summit League Student-Athlete Advisory
Committee (SAAC) officer, had five kills with a .400 attack percentage and a
team-high 10 digs. Egan hit .455 on five kills and collected two of
Western's four block assists.
Murphy
(seven digs) and freshman Jessie Lantz (eight digs) were major contributors to
a strong defensive effort that included 41 digs and three total blocks. Offensively,
Western outhit Centenary .253 to .012 and recorded 39 kills compared to the
Ladies' 20.
Western Illinois continues conference play tomorrow
when the Leathernecks take on Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Okla. at 7 p.m.
