MACOMB, Ill. — After recording his first career double-double this past week at Southern Utah, James Granstra (Heron Lake, Minn./Southwest Star Concept) has been named the Western Illinois
Scholar-Athlete of the Week based on his performance on the court and
in the classroom.
Granstra recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds in the Fighting Leathernecks' first Summit League road victory in Cedar City, Utah, Saturday. The forward/center had scoring figures in double digits in both games last week, averaging 11 points per game and seven rebounds per game. Granstra had a pair of blocked shots in each game for a new season total of 56 blocked shots, which ranks him 13th in the nation for most blocked shots and for his 2.9 blocks per game average.
With 56 blocks this season, Granstra is two blocks shy of moving into the No. 3 position for most blocked shots in a single season in Western Illinois history. Added to his 15 blocks from last season, Granstra has the fourth-most blocked shots (71) in a Western Illinois career. Dwayne Banks holds the record of 149 in just two seasons at Western ('92-'93 & '94-'95).
A construction management major, Granstra also minors in management and earned a 4.0 grade point average in the fall semester. He holds a 3.8 cumulative GPA.
Granstra and the Leathernecks resume Summit League competition as they face IPFW, Thursday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m. in Western Hall.
