LIBERTY, Mo.- The Western Illinois women's tennis team moved to 3-1 in Summit League play as it defeated Southern Utah, 4-1, in its final match of the Summit League cluster Clayview Country Club.
With the match moved indoors due to inclement weather, the two teams started with singles play. Sophomore Kate Kennedy gave the Westerwinds (8-8, 3-1 Summit League) an early lead as she defeated the Thunderbirds' Dasha Rud in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5 singles. Senior Zi Wang followed suit by beating Martha Kruk at No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-4.
After dropping the first set, junior Stephanie Baumer rebounded to take the second and third set, beating Emmi Nelson-Bulloch, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. Senior Kim Lennartsson also dropped the first set at the No. 2 position but rallied to clinch the match for Western after defeating Kirrily Burden, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
The Westerwinds return home to square off against Saint Louis, Thursday, April 9, at 3 p.m. at the varsity courts next to Brophy Hall.
