MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois men's tennis team picked up a win against St. Ambrose but dropped a pair of matches to Southwest Baptist and Grand Valley State Friday at the varsity courts next to Brophy Hall.

The Leathernecks (5-15) started the day out on Saturday by sweeping St. Ambrose, 7-0. Senior Zach Frisch and junior James McGuire defeated the Bee's top team of Kyle Wood and Luke Ebener, 8-1. At No. 3 doubles, freshman Rodrigo Azevedo and senior Michael Schild match the output of the No. 1 team by beating Andrew Sista and Mike Flynn, 8-1.

In singles play, Western swept all six matches. Azevedo only allowed two games in defeating Wood at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-2. McGuire equaled Azevedo's output by beating Nick Goodknight, 6-1, 6-1.

However, the Leathernecks lost the doubles point in the next match and dropped four out of the six singles matches. Senior Neil Lesinski beat Hgustin Mellai in straight sets to record Western's first point, 6-4, 7-5. Fellow senior Sean Ragee-Nelson picked up the other point for the Leathernecks by beating Jorge Palacios in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.

Western finished the day with dropping a close match against Grand Valley State, 4-3. After dropping the doubles point and leveling the match at 3-3, the outcome came down to the No. 5 singles match. Freshman Jim Capalbo found himself in a third set at No. 5, before eventually falling in the decisive set.

The Leathernecks will host a pair of matches tomorrow against Chicago State, at 12 p.m., and Lewis at 4 p.m. with both matches schedules to be played at Lakeside Racquet Club in Galesburg, Ill.
