Westerwinds win in home debut, Leathernecks pick up second win

MACOMB, Ill.- The Western Illinois women's tennis team was victorious in its home debut and the men's team ended its four-match losing streak as both teams picked up 7-0 wins against Quincy at the varsity tennis courts next to Brophy Hall.

The Leathernecks (2-10) picked up the doubles point against the Hawks by gaining wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles positions. Senior Zach Frisch and junior James McGuire defeated Rodrigo and Alonso Marroquin at No. 2 singles, 8-3. Freshman Rodrigo Azevedo and senior Michael Schild followed with a win at No. 3 doubles by defeating Sean Miller and Jacob Lord, 8-4.

In singles play, Frisch only allowed one game to Rodrigo Marroquin in No. 1 singles and was victorious, 6-0, 6-1. Sophomore Francisco Ortiz picked up his first win of the spring season by defeating Alonso Marroquin at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-0. Other winners for Western were seniors Neil Lesinski (No. 3, 6-2, 6-2) and Sean Ragee-Nelson (No. 4, 6-2, 6-2), Azevedo (No. 5, 6-1, 6-1) and freshman Mandela Shepard (No. 6, 6-3, 6-2).

The Westerwinds (4-7) swept all three doubles matches to take the doubles point from Quincy. Juniors Stephanie Baumer and Yana Meinert were nearly perfect by only giving up one game, winning at No. 2 doubles over Michelle Bertelsman and Megan Marsot, 8-1. Senior Zi Wang and junior Amanda Griffin nearly matched that effort, winning at No. 1 doubles over Anele Novak and Lauren Henry, 8-2.

Western also swept all six singles matches, including a big comeback from Meinert at No. 4 singles. The Buffalo Grove, Ill., native dropped the first set and trailed in the second set to Pam Ganer before coming back to win 4-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (5). Baumer won her third singles match in four matches by defeating Bertelsman at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1. Other winners for Western were Griffin (No. 1, 6-0, 6-1), Wang (No. 2, 6-2, 6-2), sophomore Kate Kennedy (No. 5, 6-4, 6-2) and junior Courtney Brooks (No. 6, 6-0, 6-2).

The Leathernecks travel to Tulsa for four matches this weekend. The four game road trip begins with a match-up against Tulsa, Thursday, March 26, at 8 p.m., before Western competes in its first Summit League cluster of the year.

The Westerwinds remain at home as Monmouth College makes the short trip to Macomb, Monday, March 30, at 4 p.m.
