MACOMB, Ill. –The Western Illinois men's soccer team picked up its first Summit League win of the season with a 1-0 victory over IUPUI Saturday, Oct. 10.
The Fighting Leathernecks (3-7-0, 1-1-0 Summit League) got the only goal of the match in the 68th minute when Jonathan Sandoval took a rebound from an Adam Rappin shot and knocked in the game-winner.
The Jaguars saw their record drop to 1-7-3 overall and 0-1-1 in Summit League play.
"IUPUIÂ played us really tough today," Western Illinois head coach Dr. Eric Johnson said. "It was a really hard-fought win for us today and I thought our guys really responded to the challenge well."
The Leathernecks received a huge boost from a home crowd of 587, the largest of the year for Western.
"We don't often get crowds that big out here so it was great for us," Johnson said. "They gave us a really big boost. They were loud and provided a really good college atmosphere."
Western Illinois dominated possession of the ball, taking 21 shots to IUPUI's six, including a 10 to three advantage in shots on goal. Arthur Paszkowski led the Leathernecks with three shots on goal while Nathan Bruinsma and Jonathan Sandoval each tallied two.
"I thought we did a great job of dictating the pace of things today," Johnson said. "We did a great job handling the ball in our offensive zone and giving ourselves a lot of opportunities to score."
IUPUI held the advantage in corner kicks by a five to three tally and committed 12 fouls to Western's 11. Leatherneck goalie Stephen Paterson picked up his first win of the year, making three saves to preserve the shutout.
"It was great to get our first conference win," Johnson said. "It gives us a lot of momentum heading in to the next few matches and hopefully we can just build on this and carry it with us the rest of the season."
Western Illinois will travel to Northwestern for its next match at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 14.
