PEORIA, Ill. — The Western Illinois men's soccer team battled Bradley to a 1-1 draw Wednesday night, with both teams finding the back of the net in the opening 25 minutes.
Western Illinois struck first in the 23rd minute when Xavier Gagnon put the Leathernecks ahead 1-0. Gagnon finished off a chance assisted by Fabrizio Kasperiski, giving Western Illinois the early advantage.
Bradley answered just 77 seconds later, with Adrian Franks scoring in the 24th minute to bring the match level at 1-1. The teams entered halftime tied after a competitive opening 45 minutes.
The Leathernecks created opportunities throughout the second half, including shots from Gagnon, Ryan Wrobleski, Jokubas Samsonas and George Frost. Samsonas put a shot on target in the 60th minute, but Bradley goalkeeper Marcal Salom Chandre made the save.
Western Illinois goalkeeper Harvey Bolland also came up with a key save in the second half, stopping Bradley's Connor Chester in the 73rd minute to keep the match tied.
The Leathernecks continued to push for the go-ahead goal late. Diego Porras recorded a shot in the 89th minute, while Jack Schwering added another attempt moments before the final whistle.
Western Illinois was forced to play the final minutes down a player after Bruce Harris received a red card in the 87th minute. Despite playing a man down, the Leathernecks held Bradley scoreless through the final whistle to secure the 1-1 draw.
The Leathernecks return to action Saturday against Green Bay at 2 P.M.
